Fuller Notches Saves Record as Revs Grab Series Win

(York, Pa.): The York Revolution earned their first series win in over a week on Sunday, splitting a doubleheader with the Charleston Dirty Birds at PeoplesBank Park, winning 6-5 in game one but dropping game two, 5-4.

Nick Travieso was excellent in the opener but ran into trouble in the first inning, loading the bases with no outs. After an infield line out, he forced Diego Goris to ground into a double play to end the frame.

York went to work quickly in the bottom half as leadoff man Yefri Perez doubled to deep center, stole third, and came around to score on a triple to the right field corner from Elmer Reyes. Reyes scored on a Melky Mesa sacrifice fly to make it a quick 2-0 lead. The RBI was the 295th of Mesa's Revs career, bringing him within 17 of Andres Perez's franchise record of 312.

Telvin Nash tried to add to the lead on a wild pitch from Charleston lefty Denson Hull but was tagged out at the plate by the covering pitcher.

Charleston tied the game with two unearned runs in the second inning. Liam Scafiarello scored on a throwing error at third from Carlos Franco, and Tyler Blaum scored on a throwing error by Mesa who had fired a throw home from foul territory in left with Blaum faking a tag at third base.

York struck again in the bottom of the second, taking the lead on a solo homer over the Arch Nemesis from Jhon Nunez to go up 3-2.

Devon Torrence tied the game in the top of the third on a groundout, and the game stood at 3-3 into the fifth inning.

After Reyes reached on a single, Nash broke the tie by blasting a two-run homer to left center to go ahead in the fifth, 5-3. It was the 102nd of Nash's Revs career, bringing him one shy of the top 10 in Atlantic League history for career home runs.

Troy Stokes Jr. later added an RBI single to left to plate Franco for a huge insurance run, as York took a 6-3 lead.

Travieso (6-5) finished the sixth inning with another 1-2-3 frame, ending his day retiring the last 12 he faced. In the start he allowed just three hits and one earned run while striking out four en route to his fourth consecutive win as he gave the lead to closer Jim Fuller with a chance to make history in the seventh inning.

With one out, Charleston's Angel Garced knocked a double to deep right and Anfernee Seymour blasted a two-run homer to left to cut the lead to one run at 6-5.

Fuller rebounded following the homer, forcing a lineout to center and a groundout to second to close out the win.

For Fuller, it was his 11th save of the season and the 40th of his York career. That passed Mike DeMark, putting Fuller alone at the top of the franchise leaderboard in all-time saves. Fuller had tied DeMark all the way back on July 5th in game one of a doubleheader against Lancaster and had only had one other opportunity in more than a month since.

Game two started with newly acquired right hander Courtney Mack making his Revs debut. Mack walked the first two hitters followed by a two-run double to right by Goris, giving the Birds an early 2-0 lead.

York got a run back in the bottom of the first as Franco lined an RBI single to left field.

Following the Goris double, Mack began a streak of 11 straight retired before allowing a solo home run to left center by Blaum in the fourth. Blaum's homer was the first of his career and gave Charleston a 3-1 lead.

Reliever Brett de Geus kept the deficit where it was with a perfect fifth inning, including a strikeout.

York finally got to Birds starter Alec Kisena in the fifth inning, beginning with a Josue Herrera double to right to lead off the frame. Lenin Rodriguez followed by launching a two-run home run over the Nemesis in left to tie the game at 3-3 on his fifth of the year. One pitch later, JC Encarnacion gave York the lead on a line drive solo home run to left of his own, his 11th of the season.

Tuck Tucker followed with a perfect sixth out of the York bullpen, giving way to Nick Green for a chance to earn his first career save. It was the 14th scoreless outing in 16 appearances of Tucker's rookie season, and his seventh straight.

Green ran into one-out trouble in the seventh, however, walking Garced to force in the tying run following a single, hit batter, and a walk which had loaded the bases. With the lead relinquished, Green was relieved by Carlos Ventura who surrendered a sacrifice fly to Scott Kelly to give Charleston the lead, 5-4.

Charleston lefty Kevin Siegrest bounced back from his blown save a night prior, retiring the Revs in order, earning the doubleheader split with a 5-4 final.
