Brevard County Manatees News Release
The Florida Marlins/Florida State League Scholarship Committee awarded 11 recipients with $1,000 educational scholarships at their meeting on Thursday, August 3, 2006 in Daytona Beach. The committee made the awards after a review of the applications submitted by Florida State League Teams. League President Chuck Murphy stated: "This program is one of our most important things we do in this League and I congratulate the General Managers on their dedication and emphasis placed on this endeavor."
The Florida Marlins have sponsored this program with the Florida State League the past seven years. Nancy Olson, Florida Marlins Community Executive Director, plays a key role in this program and is responsible for the continued success of this project.
To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be an employee of - or the child or grandchild of - an employee of the participating club during the 2006 Florida State League Season, and must be at least a high school junior by the 2006 Fall Term.
The winners will be guests of the Florida Marlins on Sunday, August 20, 2006 at Pro Player Stadium and will be recognized on the field in pre-game ceremonies. The game is at 1:05 PM and the visiting team will be the Atlanta Braves.
The scholarship winners are:
Brevard County Manatees - Mr. Joel Zawacki
Clearwater Threshers - Mr. Willis Erickson
Daytona Cubs - Mr. Emmanuel J. Cosme
Fort Myers Miracle - Ms. Nicole M. McNabb
Jupiter Hammerheads - Mr. Charles S. Sanford
Lakeland Tigers - Mr. Sean Pera
Palm Beach Cardinals - Ms. Stephanie Francesco
St. Lucie Mets - Ms. Megan Bowes
Sarasota Reds - Mr. Joseph Salomone
Tampa Yankees - Mr. Matthew Gess
Vero Beach Dodgers - Ms. Edith Marcelle
Joel ended his internship with the Brevard County Manatees this past Sunday to return home to Indiana to prepare for college. He will begin his final semester of school at the University of Indianapolis and will begin a mandatory second internship (with the Indianapolis Pacers of the NBA) in a couple weeks. Joel was a welcome addition to our staff this spring and summer and we'll have to see about getting him back into the fold before he goes out on 'free agency' in the sports world.
Congratulations, Joel, for a job well done. I know many Manatees fans and staff wish him the best in his future endeavors.
