ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks announced the retirement of pitcher Joe Barbosa following Monday's 11-9 win over Ohio Valley.
Barbosa, a right-hander, cited pain in his pitching shoulder as the reason for his retirement. The 24-year-old was in his third season and had spent his entire professional career with the RiverHawks.
Barbosa was 3-0 with a 1.92 earned-run average, tied with Kalamazoo reliever Brian Beuning for the Frontier League lead entering play on Monday.
Barbosa was a late scratch from his scheduled start on Monday. He was replaced by Kevin Crowley.
The RiverHawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 13th season. All games are broadcasted live on WRHL-FM, 102.3 - the Hub.
