Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, WI. - The host Green Bay Bullfrogs (12-26) score four unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take their first lead; however, the visiting Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (17-20) tallied seven straight runs of their own in the next four frames to secure the 11-7 victory at Joannes Stadium Thursday evening. The Rafters complete the two-game sweep as they improve to 3-1 against Green Bay this season. The Bullfrogs suffer their seventh straight defeat.
Wisconsin Rapids got off to a quick start in the opening frame as Jack-Thomas Wold drilled a two-run blast to give the visitors an early 2-0 advantage. Green Bay answered immediately in the bottom frame with a lead-off solo jack from Matthew Acosta (Sophomore, USC) to cut the deficit down to 2-1.
The Rafters crushed two more solo home runs in the third and fourth innings by Steven Rivas and Wold to stretch the lead out to 4-0. The Bullfrogs trimmed the margin down to one run in the fourth inning on two RBI singles from Cooper Morrison (Sophomore, UC Davis) and Alejandro Gonzalez (Freshman, Hillsborough CC) to make it a 4-3 game.
Green Bay stormed back in the next inning as Acosta laced a lead-off double and scored on a wild pitch to knot the score at 4-4. A solo bomb by Preston Pavlica (Junior, Grand Canyon Univ.) gave the Bullfrogs their first lead of the game at 5-4 in the fifth.
Wisconsin Rapids responded in the top half of the sixth inning with a RBI single from Mike Rojas followed by Brett Fehr grounding into a fielder's choice to put the Rafters back on top 6-5. The Rafters added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh and eighth frames with a sacrifice fly and Payton Roberton's RBI double to extend the lead out to 8-5. The visitors were not done yet, posting three more runs in the ninth to hold on for the four-run triumph.
Acosta and Pavlica each finished with an identical stat line of 2-for-4 with two runs scored, one RBI and a walk to lead the Green Bay offense. Riley Mihalik (Junior, Rider Univ.) went 2-for-3 with a double, while Alejandro Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with one run driven in.
Wisconsin Rapids relief pitcher Kyle Hodgson earned the win, improving to 2-0. Green Bay reliever Kenny Carrillo (Sophomore, Golden West College) took the loss, falling to 0-2. Bullfrogs starter Ryan Gowens (Senior, Univ. of Arizona) compiled a season-high nine strikeouts in his five innings of work, which is the most by any Bullfrogs pitcher so far this summer.
The Bullfrogs remain at home tomorrow night for the first of four consecutive games within the friendly confines of Joannes Stadium. Green Bay hosts Kalamazoo for the opener of a two-game series as the Growlers venture to Titletown for the final times this season. First pitch is slated for a 6:35 p.m. start.
