Rockford IceHogs News Release

Rockford, Ill.- Rockford IceHogs Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Steve Martinson announced on Thursday the United Hockey League club's training camp roster, and that forward Bryce Cockburn and defenseman Luke Fritshaw have signed with the club. Terms of the agreements were not disclosed.

With Cockburn and Fritshaw, Rockford has 19 players under contract for the club's eighth training camp. The camp kicks off on Monday, Oct. 2 at 10 a.m. at Riverview Icehouse. Practice on Monday is open to the public.

Cockburn returns stateside after spending the 2005-06 season with the Hannover Indians (GerObl) in Germany. A star at Northern Michigan University, Cockburn won't join the IceHogs until December as he earns his college degree. This season marks the Campbell River, British Columbia's fourth in pro hockey.

"Bryce is a highly skilled, two-way player, who has ECHL championship experience," said Martinson.

The winger last played in the states during the 2004-05 season with the Trenton Titans (ECHL). The Titans won the Kelly Cup Championship that season and Cockburn accounted for 4g-4a-8pts in 20 postseason games. Cockburn scored the game-winning goal for Trenton in Game Six of the Finals against the Florida EverBlades, the Championship clincher, a 4-1 win. During the regular season, Cockburn had 13g-14a-27pts in 70 contests.

While in college, Cockburn ranked in the top three on the Wildcats in scoring in each of his final three seasons. In four seasons, Cockburn potted 63 goals and assisted on 56 others in 148 games. Cockburn was a teammate of former IceHogs wingers Chris Gobert and Terry Harrison at Northern Michigan.

Martinson also added another defenseman to the roster with Fritshaw. The 6-4, 220-pound blueliner got a jump start on training camp, skating with the American Hockey League's Manitoba Moose. The upcoming season is Fritshaw's second in pro hockey. Last year, the Tisdale, Saskatchewan native spent his rookie campaign with the Long Beach Ice Dogs (ECHL) scoring a pair of goals and adding seven helpers.

"Luke combines physical play with the ability to move the puck up the ice," said Martinson. "His junior numbers show that he can contribute offensively. His forte is moving people out from in front of the net."

In juniors, Fritshaw skated with the Prince Albert Raiders in the Western Hockey League. Fritshaw played with the Raiders for parts of five seasons before turning pro. During his final year in Prince Albert in 2004-05, Fritshaw put up his best numbers, registering 8g-33a-41pts in 72 games.

Of the 19 players currently on the IceHogs training camp roster, 10 are forwards, seven are defensemen and two goaltenders. The IceHogs had 11 players in American Hockey League camps when they opened last week, and a number of those players could remain with their respective AHL club when the IceHogs camp commences on Monday. Players on the current training camp roster do not include other skaters who are expected to sign Try Out Agreements with the IceHogs when camp begins on Monday.

Other skaters listed on the IceHogs training camp roster include forwards Jesse Bennefield, Nicolas Corbeil, Mike Doyle, Josh Hechtor, Erick Lizon, Preston Mizzi, Kevin Ulanski, Rob Voltera and Steve Yetman. The defensemen corps includes Jared Bourassa, Dan Boeser, Matt Gens, Lee Jacobson, Mike Letizia and Tom Zabkowicz with Frederic Cloutier and Brenden Cuthbert in goal.
