Frisco RoughRiders News Release
Extra, extra!: The RoughRiders came ready to hit in the series opener against the Missions last night, cracking eight extra-base hits in an 11-2 pounding of San Antonio. Frisco's relentless offensive burst began in the first inning when Odubel Herrera tripled off Josh Geer and scored on a Jim Adduci sac fly. The 'Riders added single runs in the third and fourth innings on a Herrera RBI fielder's choice and a Hanser Alberto run-scoring single. The first four innings were just a warmup act for a lopsided fifth, which featured ten batters, seven hits and six runs, all scoring against the starter Geer. Adduci brought home two with a double, as did J.T. Wise, who scored on a Jake Skole two-bagger. Alberto's triple scored Skole to make it 9-0 Frisco. Adduci capped a four-RBI game with a solo home run in the sixth inning off Jeff Ibarra, pushing the lead to ten runs. After the Missions got on the scoreboard with a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the frame, Wise hit his second double in the seventh to bring home another run. The RoughRiders tied a season-high with 17 hits on the night and the six-run fifth inning matched the team's biggest-scoring frame of the season. The win was Frisco's second straight and it sent San Antonio to its sixth consecutive defeat.
Today's Pitching Matchup: Frisco aims to make it three wins in a row with Edwar Cabrera on the mound against San Antonio and starter Leonel Campos. Cabrera received a no-decision on Wednesday against Corpus Christi, allowing three runs in 6.1 innngs. The lefty has been excellent in his last four starts. Despite posting a 1-2 record, he has a 1.98 ERA (6 ER/27.1 IP), 13 strikeouts and just one walk. In three games (two starts) against the Missions this season, Cabrera is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA. Campos is making his first start against Frisco, but he had three scoreless appearances against the 'Riders earlier this season (5 IP). The RoughRiders have historically had trouble with him; including last year, Campos has pitched 11 times against Frisco and is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER/14.1 IP, with two unearned runs), seven hits allowed, three walks, 21 strikeouts and a .137 batting average against (7 for 51). He has been used out of the bullpen almost exclusively in his career until mid-June, when he moved into San Antonio's starting rotation. He has not pitched past the fifth inning in any of his starts, but had thrown the ball well until his last start at Midland (1.1 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 4 BB). Prior to that outing, he allowed two runs in his first start but none in his next four. Campos started the season in Triple-A, but struggled mightily in El Paso, posting an 11.70 ERA (13 ER/ 10 IP) in 11 games, allowing 20 hits and 13 walks with 13 strikeouts. He was sent to San Antonio in early-May and allowed six runs in his first six appearances before showing tremendous improvement. Even with the rough outing his last time out, he owns a 2.45 ERA (8 ER/29.1 IP) in his last 15 appearances. Campos split 2013 between San Antonio (1-0, 0.88 ERA, 30.2 IP, 14 H, 16 BB, 43 K, .137 BAA) and Single-A Fort Wayne (2-1, 2.23 ERA, 36.1 IP, 19 H, 22 BB, 63 K, .150 BAA) and was named an MiLB.com Organizational All-Star for the Padres. Campos was an aspiring soccer player in his youth and did not sign a professional contact with San Diego until December 21, 2010 when he was already 23. He made just one start for Eugene in his first pro season in 2011, but ended up missing most of the year with an elbow strain that eventually required Tommy John surgery, which in turn forced him to miss all of 2012. He throws a 95-98 mph fastball, a sinker, an excellent slider and a changeup.
The Future is now: As it turned out, the RoughRiders' slugging nature was infective even for players who were not with the team on Sunday. Third baseman Joey Gallo missed the last three games to take part in Sunday's Sirius/XM All-Star Future's Game at Target Field in Minneapolis and the power hitter did not disappoint. After blasting 15 home runs during batting practice, Gallo went 1 for 4 with a game-winning two-run home run in the sixth inning to propel the U.S. team to a 3-2 victory over the World. Gallo was named the game's MVP for his efforts, becoming the first Rangers prospect to win the honor. A year after becoming the first teenager in more than 50 years to hit 40 home runs in a minor league season, 20-year-old Joey Gallo became the first player in professional baseball to hit 30 home runs this season with homer on July 3. He is now tied with Iowa's Kris Bryant for the most in the minors with 31. Since joining the RoughRiders, Gallo is first in the TL in homers (10), second in RBI (23), tied for third in runs scored (20), second in slugging percentage (.644), second OPS (1.014), tied for second in extra-base hits (17) and second in total bases (65). In a statistical oddity, Gallo has hit 93 career home runs and 94 career singles. Minor League Baseball's reigning home run king, the Las Vegas native once again leads all of professional baseball with 31 round-trippers this season (tied with Bryant). Gallo is first in slugging percentage (.703), second in OPS (1.137), eighth in on-base percentage (.434), tied for fourth in runs (73), third in total bases (204), eighth in RBI (73) and third in extra-base hits (50).
Ballpark breakthrough: Sunday's 11-2 thrashing of the Missions was a bit unexpected because of the venue in which it took place. The 11 runs were the most scored by the RoughRiders in their last 36 games there, going back to an 11-10 victory over the Missions on June 6, 2012. This season they had been particularly punchless in San Antonio's home ballpark. While Frisco is 6-2 against the Mis- sions at Dr Pepper Ballpark, the 'Riders are only 3-6 in their games at San Antonio's Wolff Stadium. The RoughRiders have outscored the Missions 38 to 17 at home (average score of 4.8 to 2.1), but prior to Sunday were getting outscored 44 to 24 at the Wolff (5.5 to 3.0) this season. In the first two series here this season, Frisco actually out-hit San Antonio in its home ballpark, .255 (71 for 278) to .254 (67 for 264), but with runners in scoring position, the 'Riders hit .203 (15 for 74) while the Missions' mark is .274 (20 for 73). For the entire season, Frisco is the best in the Texas League with runners in scoring position (.279) while only Northwest Arkansas and Springfield have lower averages than San Antonio's .237.
Back in the saddle again: After falling out of first place in the overall Texas League South Division standings for two days, the RoughRiders found themselves in familiar territory after last night's win. Frisco regained the top spot in the division by one-half game thanks to a win and a Midland loss. The 'Riders recently had their streak of 66 straight days with the league's best record broken, but they have still had a share of first place in the TL South for 84 of the 102 league days this season.
MASH unit: The RoughRiders have two Rangers players on rehab assignments for the series at San Antonio. Catcher Geovany Soto (right knee surgery) and outfielder/first baseman Jim Adduci (fractured left little finger) are playing for Frisco on their journeys back to Arlington. Soto has played in four Texas League games since his rehab moved from Round Rock (where he was 0 for 16 in five games) and is 5 for 11 with a double, one RBI, four runs score, three walks and three strikeouts. The former NL Rookie of the Year suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee late in spring training, requiring surgery, and has not played in the big leagues yet this season. Adduci played in his second rehab game last night and went 2 for 3 with a double, home run and four RBI. In his two games with Frisco, he is 4 for 6 with a double, homer, five RBI, two runs scored and a steal. He broke camp with the Rangers and suffered a fracture of his left pinky finger sliding headfirst into first base in a game in mid-April. While rehabbing the injury in early June for Round Rock, he re- fractured the same finger while attempting to make a diving catch at first base.
Odubel your pleasure: Odubel Herrera set the tone in Sunday's blowout win over the Missions, tripling and scoring in the first inning. He also added an RBI fielder's choice and a single with another run scored later in the game. Herrera has a hit in 16 of his last 17 games and is batting .359 (23 for 64) during this stretch. Over the last 26 games, the All-Star second baseman has had multiple hits 12 times and is batting .392 (30 for 102) with six doubles, two triples, 15 RBI, 11 runs scored, six walks, six steals a .427 on-base percentage and a .917 OPS. Since June 11, he leads the Texas League in batting average and is third in on-base percentage.
Playing not to lose: Frisco went 70-70 in 2013 and its all-time record is 871-747 (.538). It was the eighth straight season that the RoughRiders finished with a non-losing record. The last time Frisco finished below .500 was the only time in team history, back in 2005 when it finished 58-82. The streak of non-losing seasons is by far the longest in the Texas League; every other team in the circuit has had at least one losing season in the last three years. The streak is the longest in Double-A and the third-longest among all 120 full- season minor league clubs, exceeded only by the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats (11 straight non-losing seasons) and the Advanced-A San Jose Giants (ten). Including teams that play in short-season leagues, Frisco's streak is the sixth longest; the Elizabethton Twins (25), Brooklyn Cyclones (13) and AZL Giants (13) have the longest such streaks in stateside Minor League Baseball.
