San Antonio Missions News Release
San Antonio was unable to hold onto a late lead as they suffered a frustrating, 8-6 loss to Frisco Wednesday night at Wolff Stadium.
Johnny Hellweg got the ball for the Missions Wednesday evening looking to turn around a tough start to his 2016 campaign. In the top of the first it appeared, however, that the struggles were going to continue. Frisco plated two in the frame, and threatened to do more, but Hellweg caught a break when Joe Jackson lined into an inning-ending double play with runners on second and third.
San Antonio answered in the bottom half with two of its own against starter Reed Garrett. Nelson Ward scored the first run on a Garrett wild pitch. Two batters later, Nick Torres tied the game at two with a single into right-center field.
The 'Riders struck again in the third, taking a 3-2 lead on Zach Cone's two-out single up the middle.
In the bottom of the fourth, San Antonio went back on the attack, beginning with a Mike Olt walk. Garrett appeared to be in decent shape when he surrounded another free pass with two outs. However, the right-hander made a critical mistake to next batter, Nick Schulz, who belted the first pitch high and deep onto the berm in left center. The three-run homer was Schulz's second already in just four Double-A games.
Olt pushed the San Antonio lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single to center.
After putting up zeroes in both the fourth and fifth, Hellweg ran into trouble in the sixth, allowing a Cone RBI double that trimmed the lead to two. A couple of batters later, Kellin Deglan made the score 6-5 with a run-producing fielder's choice off Hellweg's replacement, Kyle Bartsch. San Antonio's third pitcher of the frame, Eric Yardley, ended up halting the rally by fanning Ryan Cordell.
The San Antonio pen was unable to stop the next Frisco rally in the eighth as Yardley (0-2) and Adam Cimber combined to allow three runs, capped by a Ronald Guzman double to deep right.
Frisco's pen duo of Ryne Slack and Matt Bush (5th save) shut the door on San Antonio over the final two frames. It was the RoughRiders' ninth straight win over the Missions dating back to late in the 2015 season.
San Antonio (9-17) resumes its four-game series with Frisco (19-6) Thursday on Cricket Dollar Night presented by News 4 San Antonio and Cox Media Group. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Bryce Morrow (0-2, 7.36) gets the ball for the Missions, while the 'Riders counter with southpaw Frank Lopez (2-0, 3.25).
