Frischmon, Boyer Push IceGators over Cottonmouths
LAFAYETTE, La.--One night after suffering bus breakdowns and a beating at the hands of the Pensacola IceFlyers, the Louisiana IceGators entered the Cajundome with a ton of pent-up rage.
They unleashed that rage on the Columbus Cottonmouths.
The IceGators jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second period en route to a 3-1 victory over the Cottonmouths. Zac Frischmon and Jeremy Boyer contributed a goal and an assist each.
The IceGators return to action Sunday when they take on the Macon Mayhem. Game time is set for 3:05 p.m.
"Overall, I'm pleased with the two points," IceGators head coach Drew Omicioli said. "Columbus battled hard, and it was a dogfight to the finish, but we need to get to two-goal leads and extend them to three-, four-, and five-goal leads instead of putting ourselves in situations where we're one shot away from losing a game.
"We played well in the first five minutes of the first period, but then we had a big lapse in the last fifteen minutes. We completely dominated the second period. The third period was one of our worst periods we've played over the last 10 games. We had no jump, we took stupid penalties, gave them four power plays--one they capitalized on--and we let them back into the game."
Frischmon put Louisiana on the board 61 seconds into the second period off feeds from Boyer and Travis Armstrong. That line struck again nearly 11 minutes later, when Boyer scored off assists from Frischmon and Luke Sandler.
Columbus cut the IceGators lead to a goal with 9:10 remaining in the game when Chris Rial scored a power play goal off feeds from Rusty Hafner and Tyler Henry.
The IceGators appeared to take a 3-1 lead with about five minutes left in the game when Frishmon muscled the puck past goalie Brandon Jaeger, but the referee waved off the goal, citing goaltender interference.
Louisiana rebounded moments later. Jake Hauswirth scored with 2:26 left in the game off assists from Alex Hudson and John Daniels to take a seal the win for the IceGators.
"I thought the Boyer, Frischmon, and Sandler line played extremely well," Omicioli said. "Our defensemen played great even though we had only five of them. Armstrong and (Jordan) Ciccarello played a solid game, and (goalie) Adam Courchaine was outstanding between the pipes. We did enough to win. As a coach, I know we're going to make mistakes, but we have to find a way to eliminate them in key situations. Hauswirth came up with that key goal to pull us through. After that, we shut the door."
Omicioli says his team needs to put its dreadful third period against Columbus behind them and get ready for a Mayhem squad who looks to overtake the IceGators in the SPHL standings.
"I'm proud of the win, but we have to bring more as a team (against Macon) to beat them," Omicioli said. The win creates some space in the standings, and it helps us continue to climb the ladder. Now, we need to put together a solid 60 minutes against Macon to win two more enormous points."
