Fresno Wins Taylor Cup With 3-2 Double Overtime Victory In Game 6

Boise, ID. – Chris Porter scored 4:23 into the second overtime to give the Fresno Falcons a 3-2 win and the first Taylor Cup in franchise history 4 games to 2 over Idaho. In a tremendous game Fresno goalie Terry Friesen stopped 48 of 50 Idaho shots to backstop his team to the win. Porter was selected as the WCHL Playoff MVP. A season high 5,427 fans turned out to the BofA Centre to see one of the greatest games in WCHL history.

In the first period the team raced up and down the ice trading chances and goals. Junkin scored at 1:57 to cap off a two-on-one and put Fresno on the board. Scott Swanson (3) answered with a blast from the point at 3:50 to tie the game. Fresno surged ahead again when Weaver finished off a two-on-one at 15:38. Just 13 seconds later Eric Rud (1) tied the game with a slap shot that was tipped. The teams combined for 28 shots in the first period with Idaho out shooting Fresno 17-11.

In the second period the pace of the game slowed and neither team could crack the net. In the third Friesen and Idaho goalie Blair Allison traded great saves and kept the game tied 2-2 thru regulation. In the first overtime the Steelheads had two power play chances and 16 shots, but Friesen was brilliant to keep his team in the game and force a second overtime. Idaho had several chances at the start of the second overtime frame, but it was Fresno that capitalized when Porter swept home a rebound at 4:23 to set of the Fresno Falcons celebration.
