Fresno Grizzlies Announce 2016 Roster

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno Grizzlies, Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, made their 2016 opening day roster public this afternoon. (Roster and official announcement from Houston is attached.) While still subject to change prior to opening day, these are the 25 players Fresno plans to open the season with as the team begins 2016 on the road with eight games at Las Vegas and Salt Lake from April 7-14. The Grizzlies will begin the home portion of the '16 campaign on Friday, April 15 with a return trip by Las Vegas and Salt Lake to Chukchansi Park for eight games.

Pitchers: Left-handers Edwar Cabrera, Kevin Chapman and Tommy Shirley, and right-handers Chris Devenski, Jandel Gustave, Mike Hauschild, James Hoyt, Juan Minaya, Brad Peacock, Brady Rodgers, Cesar Valdez and Asher Wojciechowski. Shirley, Devenski, Gustave, Hauschild, Peacock and Rodgers will begin the season as starters for Fresno.

Catchers: Tyler Heineman and Roberto Pena.

Infielders: Nolan Fontana, Tony Kemp, Colin Moran, A.J. Reed, Jon Singleton and Danny Worth.

Outfielders: Andrew Aplin, Leo Heras, Jon Kemmer and Eury Perez.

Fresno begins the season with the following top Houston Astros prospects, as rated by Baseball America (Top 10) & MLB.com (Top 30); 1B A.J. Reed (#1 BA/#2 MLB.com), 3B Colin Moran (#8 BA/#6 MLB.com), 2B/OF Tony Kemp (#14 MLB.com), RHP Jandel Gustave (#19 MLB.com), OF Jon Kemmer (#21 MLB.com), RHP Chris Devenski (#24 MLB.com) and OF Andrew Aplin (#28 MLB.com).

A season ago, Reed led all minor leagues combined in home runs (34) and RBI (127), splitting the season between A-Advanced Lancaster (California League) and Double-A Corpus Christi (Texas League). Kemp was named PCL Playoffs Most Valuable Player, while Devenski was Most Valuable Player of the Triple-A National Championship Game in El Paso, tossing seven shutout hittings allowing just one hit with nine strikeouts, in Fresno's 7-0 win over Columbus. Kemmer, batting .327 at Corpus Christi, won the Texas League batting title.

Chapman, Peacock, Wojciechowski and Singleton all contributed to Houston's American League Wild Card-winning club at some point last season. Perez also enjoyed Major League time last year, 47 games with the Atlanta Braves.
