Reno Aces News Release
RENO - The Reno Aces secured a convincing 8-0 victory over the University of Nevada Wolf Pack in the seventh annual exhibition between both squads in front of 2,553 fans Tuesday night at Greater Nevada Field. Reno pounded out 11 hits to Nevada's two in the seven-inning win.
Over the seven years the two teams have played, the Reno Aces Baseball Club has donated $97,500 to the University of Nevada Dugout Club, an organization that serves as the main fundraising body of the University of Nevada baseball team.
The 2016 version of the exhibition was set to feature lineup mixtures for both teams, but NCAA regulations quickly ended the proposition. Unlike past years where Aces pitchers and catchers were utilized for both teams, Nevada used its own battery for the exhibition.
And with long-time friends Phil Nevin and T.J. Bruce managing both sides, the game still provided friendly fire.
Consecutive two-out singles by Zach Borenstein and Mike Freeman (@MikeBFree5) extended the home half of the second inning, and a well-executed double steal by the duo resulted in Borenstein scoring the game's first run.
Two innings later, the Aces plated three runs to make it 4-0. Freeman again played a part, bringing home Carlos Rivero (@Carlos_Rivero3) and Peter O'Brien with an opposite-field double to left. Freeman then hustled home on a run-scoring single by Jack Reinheimer (@Reinheimer_08).
Freeman wasn't finished at the dish. The 28-year-old drove another double - this time to right - scoring Adam Loewen all the way from first base. Later in the frame, Stewart Ijames (@StewI_5) singled in Freeman before Sean Jamieson (@SeanJay04) provided the only home run of the game, a two-run shot to left-center, pushing the lead to 8-0.
The Aces received 3.1 shutout innings from starter Matt Buschmann before five relievers - Scott Rice (@elArroz_56), Cody Hall (@C_Hall18), Loewen, Seth Simmons (@SizzleSimmons) and Dominic Leone (@DLeone54) - combined to record the final 11 outs.
Freeman led the Aces' offensive attack, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and three RBI.
Nevada's pitching staff racked up six strikeouts in the loss, four coming from left-handed starter Anthony Martine.
The Aces open the 2016 season Thursday, April 7 at Greater Nevada Field against the El Paso Chihuahuas, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. Right-hander Archie Bradley will start for the Aces with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. Ticket packages are on-sale now at www.renoaces.com or by calling (775) 334-4700.
