Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y.) - The three-time Atlantic League champion Long Island Ducks today announced that first baseman Nate Freiman's contract has been purchased by the Boston Red Sox organization. He will report to the team's Double-A affiliate in Portland, Maine.
"Nate has been a welcome addition to our lineup ever since joining the club," said Ducks President/GM Michael Pfaff. "We wish him the best of luck with the Red Sox organization."
Freiman has played in six games with the Ducks, compiling a .381 batting average with two home runs, four RBI, five runs scored and one double. Most recently, he launched a pair of longballs in the Ducks' 7-1 win over the Bridgeport Bluefish on Saturday at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard, becoming the first Duck with a multi-homer game this year. The 29-year-old reached base safely in all six games he played in with Long Island, earning hits in five of them.
The former big leaguer is currently in his eighth season of professional baseball. He spent parts of two seasons (2013-14) in the Major Leagues with the Oakland Athletics, combining to bat .256 with nine homers, 39 RBI, 22 runs and 13 doubles in 116 games. The Washington D.C. native began the 2016 season with Syracuse (AAA, Nationals), playing in eight games, and has also spent four seasons in the San Diego Padres organization. The Duke University alum was originally drafted by the Padres in the eighth round of the 2009 amateur draft.
Freiman becomes the third Ducks player to have his contract purchased by a Major League or foreign organization in 2016. He joins pitcher Bruce Kern (Kansas City Royals) and infielder Mark Minicozzi (Vaqueros Laguana, Mexico).
The Long Island Ducks are members of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball and play their home games at Bethpage Ballpark. For further information, call (631) 940-DUCK or visit www.liducks.com.
