Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Bridgeport, CT) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (5-12) were defeated by the Long Island Ducks (10-6) 9-4 in the finale of a three game weekend series at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Sunday afternoon. Long Island completes a sweep of the opening series in the 2016 edition of the Ferry Cup. The Ducks were victorious for the ninth consecutive game and handed Bridgeport their season high seventh straight loss. Long Island outscored Bridgeport 21-6 in the three meetings in the Park City.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher R.J. Hively (0-2) was tagged with the loss, lasting five and one third innings, allowing five runs (three earned runs) on four hits, walking three, striking out four and throwing a wild pitch. Long Island Starting Pitcher Darin Downs (1-1) picked up the victory, allowing two runs on three hits in five innings of work, walking two, striking out two, and hitting one batter.

Long Island took the edge in the top half of the second inning off Hively on a one out RBI triple by Anthony Vega, plating Cody Puckett with the game's first run after he reached on an error by Bridgeport shortstop Luis Hernandez to open up the frame. Bridgeport responded with a pair of runs in the home half of the fourth inning off Downs to take their first lead of the series at 2-1 on a run scoring groundout by Carlos Sosa, plating Luis Rodriguez who drew a leadoff walk, and an RBI single by Luis Nunez that came with two men out, driving home Wilkin Ramirez who was hit by a pitch.

The Ducks would regain the lead for good in the top of the sixth by batting around and scoring four times for a 5-2 edge. With three ducks on the pond and one out with Bridgeport clinging to a one run advantage, Mike Dowd lifted a fly ball to right field that was dropped by Wilkin Ramirez, and the second of a season high five errors on the afternoon committed by the Bluefish gave Long Island a 3-2 lead. Fehlandt Lentini made it 5-2 in favor of the visitors with a two run single, and in the blink of an eye Bridgeport's one run lead had evaporated.

Trailing 9-2, the Bluefish continued to fight so very hard until the 27th and final out was recorded as they tried to mount a miraculous comeback in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Ruben Sosa Jr. drove home a pair of runs with a two out single scoring Ramirez who led off with a double and Josh Vitters who was hit by a pitch, all coming against Ducks reliever Kevin Vance. Sosa Jr. put the Bluefish back within striking distance at 9-4, while also extending his on base streak to a season high fifteen consecutive games after being retired in his previous four at bats. The comeback fell just short as Long Island would not allow the 'Fish to get any closer as they were able to leave the Ballpark at Harbor Yard with three wins in as many days heading back across the Long Island Sound with a 9-4 Mother's Day victory. Rodriguez led the offensive attack for the Bluefish with three hits, increasing his average to .302 while recording his second three hit game and third multi hit game of the young season.
