Fredericksburg Nationals News Release
FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Fayetteville pitching picked up their second shutout in three games this week, as the Woodpeckers shutout the Nats 4-0. Fayetteville pushed their record to 8-4, while Fredericksburg slipped to 7-5.
The Woodpeckers tagged Jose Atencio for a run in the top of the first inning. Anthony Sherwin laced a leadoff single, and moved to second base on a ground out. Fayetteville then got back-to-back singles to bring Sherwin across, and take an early 1-0 lead.
Fayetteville starter Alonzo Tredwell breezed through the first two innings, before they got him another run in the third inning. Kenni Gomez reached base with a one out single, then after a groundout, came in to score on a double by Juan Santander as the Woodpeckers pulled ahead 2-0.
That score held for quite a while, as both pitching staffs settled into a groove. For Fredericksburg, Jose Atencio went on to complete five strong innings without any further damage, while striking out seven men and walking none. But Fayetteville matched the Nats stride for stride between Tredwell and reliever Kelly Austin, who combined to spin five scoreless innings of their own, with 11 punchouts.
Colby Langford followed Austin from the Fayetteville 'pen, and was just as sharp. The southpaw limited Fredericksburg to just one base hit over three innings, but the Nats did put some pressure on him in the bottom of the eighth. Roismar Quintana lined a two-strike pitch back up the middle, before Everett Cooper III walked to put two men aboard. However, Nate Ochoa bounced into a double play, and Phillip Glasser grounded out to second to end the threat.
Amilcar Chirinos fired a perfect ninth inning, to wrap up Fayetteville's second shutout win of the week, 4-0. Langford got the win (2-0), Chirinos earned his first save, with Atencio (1-1) taking the loss. In game four, Jarlin Susana (0-1, 4.50) goes up against Alain Peña (1-0, 2.45) in a 7:05 start.
