Biloxi Shuckers News Release
BILOXI, MS - Behind a career-high five RBI from Freddy Zamora, the Biloxi Shuckers (55-53, 21-18) jumped into sole possession of first place in the South Division with a 14-7 win over the Tennessee Smokies (62-45, 26-13) on Sunday at MGM Park. The win puts the Shuckers a game ahead of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos and Montgomery Biscuits with 30 games remaining in the half.
Zamora jumpstarted the Shuckers' offense in the first after Smokies' starter Joe Nahas walked the bases loaded. Zamora, in his first at-bat of the day, launched a grand slam to left, the first of his career, giving the Shuckers a 4-0 lead. After the Smokies got their first run on a fielder's choice from Nelson Maldonado, Jeferson Quero smashed his first home run since being activated off the injured list on Wednesday. His two-run blast gave Biloxi a 6-1 lead.
Tennessee pulled within two with a two-RBI single from Andy Weber and an RBI single from BJ Murray in the fourth. The Shuckers, however, struck back with an RBI single from Carlos Rodriguez. His single was part of his fifth straight multi-hit game, tying the Shuckers' franchise record.
In the sixth, the Smokies brought home two on a wild pitch and an error, making it 7-6. The Shuckers exploded in the seventh to the tune of seven runs on eight hits. All nine in the order reached in the inning, and the Shuckers scored off RBI base hits from Jeferson Quero, Freddy Zamora, Felix Valerio, Brent Diaz and Lamar Sparks. The 14th run of the day came home on a fielder's choice from Carlos Rodriguez with one out, giving Biloxi 14 runs in their second straight series finale at MGM Park.
The Smokies scored their final run on a sacrifice fly in the eighth from Cole Roeder. Shuckers' closer Cam Robinson worked around the run and two baserunners in the ninth with a double play, finishing out the Shuckers' 21st win of the second half.
Reliever Ryan Middendorf (1-1) earned the win for Biloxi while Nahas (0-1) took the loss for the Smokies. After an off day on Monday, the Shuckers will face the Mississippi Braves for a six-game set at Trustmark Park in Pearl on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
The game can be heard on Cruisin' WGCM 1240 AM, 100.9 FM with coverage beginning at 6:20 p.m. with the Biloxi Shuckers Pregame Show. The game can also be seen live on MiLB.tv.
