Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release

SPRINGDALE, Ark - Minor League Baseball announced the Pitcher and Player of the Week honors for each of the respective Player Development Leagues and Naturals' catcher/designated hitter Freddy Fermin was named the Double-A Central Player of the Week for his performance the week of July 26th through August 1st. This is the third consecutive week and fourth time in five a Naturals hitter has claimed the award, after catcher MJ Melendez was named the league's Player of the Week last week for the weeks of June 28th through July 4th, July 12th through July 18th and July 19th through July 25th. It is the sixth time a Naturals player has received a weekly award, after Alec Marsh was recognized as Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 4th through May 9th and Marcelo Martinez won the honor for his performance the week of May 31st through June 6th.

The native of Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela hit an astounding .611 (11-for-18) across five games during his award-winning week, with a league-best nine runs scored, .708 on-base percentage, 1.278 slugging percentage and overall 1.986 OPS. Fermin collected the second-most total bases in the league (23) while doubling three times, homering three times and driving in five runs, while walking six times as well. The second-year Natural homered in three consecutive games from July 28th to the 30th. He also reached base in his final nine plate appearances of the week between July 31st and August 1st (two singles, three doubles, three walks and one error).

So far this season, Fermin is hitting .323 (43-for-133) across 37 Double-A games, splitting time between catcher and designated hitter for the Naturals. He has 10 doubles, eight home runs and 32 runs batted in, with a total OPS of .998.

It is the 36th time in franchise history that a Naturals' player has won the Player of the Week award, the last being when MJ Melendez won the award last week. It is the fourth time since 2008 the Naturals have had at least four Players of the Week, the last time being 2013 when the club had five players of the week.

Luis Frias of the Amarillo Sod Poodles (Double-A, Arizona Diamondbacks) was the Double-A Central's Pitcher of the Week after throwing a seven-inning no-hitter against the San Antonio Missions on August 1st, allowing no hits or runs while walking just one and striking out and earning the win to help Amarillo sweep their doubleheader with San Antonio.

The Northwest Arkansas Naturals are the Double-A Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. They play at state-of-the-art Arvest Ballpark in Springdale, Ark.
