Fred Stanley Returns to Grizzlies

SAN FRANCISCO – Today the San Francisco Giants announced Fred Stanley would return as the field manager for the Fresno Grizzlies in 2004.

Stanley spent last season at the Grizzlies helm guiding them to a 55-88 (.385) mark.

Bill Hayes was slated to take the reins of the Grizzlies but will remain the Giants bullpen catcher.

Prior to his stint with the Grizzlies Stanley spent three seasons as the skipper of short-season Class A Salem-Kaizer. Posted a 128-100 record with the Volcanoes, including back-to-back Northwest League Manager of the Year honors and the 2001 NWL Championship.

Before coming to the Giants organization Stanley spent time in the Brewers chain, where in 1992 as the director of player development helped the organization earn TOPPS Organization of the Year.

Originally drafted by the Houston Astros, Stanley spent 14 seasons in the Major Leagues playing with the Seattle Pilots (1969), Milwaukee Brewers (1970), Cleveland Indians (1972), San Diego Padres (1972), New York Yankees (1973-1980) and the Oakland Athletics (1981-82). He participated in a divisional series (1981), four league championships (1976-78,81) and three World Series (1976-78). A defensive specialist owns a lifetime batting average of .216 in 816 Major League games.

The Grizzlies under Stanley's leadership kick off the season in Salt Lake against the Stingers Thursday, April 8th, then return to Fresno to begin their third season at Grizzlies Stadium on Friday April 16th, 7:05 vs. Salt Lake.
