San Angelo Colts News Release
HARLINGEN, Texas - Ryan Fox showed the San Angelo Colts (11-11) he could do a little bit of everything in Thursday night's series opener at Harlingen Field. He started the game as the Harlingen third baseman, went 3-for-4 with six RBIs and a grand slam, and even pitched a scoreless inning, leading the WhiteWings past the Colts 9-2, ending San Angelo's three-game winning streak.
With the bases loaded and one out in the fourth, Colts starter Frank James (1-3) hit Kevin Griffin with a pitch to force in a run and give Harlingen a 4-2 edge. The next batter was Fox and he crushed a grand slam to left-center, chasing James from the game and giving the Wings a six-run lead. James, who hit three batters, took the loss, throwing 3 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on six hits with one strikeout, and two walks.
The potent Colts' offense was shut down by three Harlingen pitchers as San Angelo managed just three hits and only one baserunner from the top of the fourth inning on. Wings starter Jorge Lugo (3-0) went seven innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits with eight strikeouts and four walks. He retired 14 of 15 before giving way to Fox, who pitched a 1-2-3 eighth with two strikeouts. Derek Bennett hurled a 1-2-3 ninth, as the last 13 San Angelo batters went down in order.
The WhiteWings grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when David Fowler scored on a wild pitch, but the Colts evened the score in the second on an RBI groundout by John Beal. San Angelo took a 2-1 lead in the third with an unearned run when Benny Craig brought home John Anderson with a sacrifice fly. The Wings came right back to take a 3-2 lead in the third on a two-run single by Fox.
Fox also scored a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Brian Nichols off Chris Weast to make it 9-2. Weast and Matt Greanead pitched very well in relief though. Weast allowed one run on four hits in 2 2/3 innings while Greanead surrendered only two walks in two innings.
The Colts continue this three-game series in Harlingen with game two at 7:05 p.m. on Friday. The Colts then return to Foster Field on Sunday, June 8 to begin a nine-game homestand. The game that day, which begins at 5:05 p.m., will feature Weiner Dog Races, sponsored by Yuppie Puppy.
