Colorado Mammoth News Release

DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth, angered by allowing a last-second goal in the third quarter, opened the fourth quarter with a three-goal burst that proved to be the difference in an 8-7 win over the San Jose Stealth on Saturday night.

Goals by Gewas Schindler, Jay Jalbert and Nick Carlson in the first 2 minutes, 6 seconds of the fourth quarter gave the Mammoth (4-3) an 8-5 lead. Goals by Cam Woods and Kevin Fines brought the Stealth (2-4) to within one, but the Mammoth defense tightened and secured the win.

Playing before a standing-room-only crowd of 18,027 at Pepsi Center, the Mammoth allowed San Jose just seven goals for the second time this season. The victory gave the Mammoth a 2-1 victory in its season-series with the Stealth. It was the Mammoth's first sellout of the season and 10th in team history.

"This was an all-around team effort," Mammoth coach Gary Gait said. "You could see that we wanted this win."

Mammoth captain Gavin Prout led the team with four points. He opened the scoring in the second half with his only goal of the game to give the Mammoth a 4-2 lead, but San Jose rallied with two consecutive goals to tie the game. Chris Gill's power-play goal returned the lead to Colorado briefly before Jeff Zywicki scored on a rocket shot from the high slot with less than a second remaining in the third quarter to tie the game 5-5.

The defenses dominated much of the first half, as the Mammoth was held scoreless for the entire second quarter. Mammoth forward Ben Prepchuk scored the first two goals of the game before Carlson's breakaway goal gave the Mammoth a 3-0 lead. Goals by Derek Malawsky and Zywicki cut the Mammoth's lead to 3-2.

Mammoth goaltender Gee Nash made 33 saves to earn his second victory of the season. Anthony Cosmo made 40 saves and took the loss for the Stealth.
