San Jose Stealth News Release

Denver - The San Jose Stealth (2-4) and the Colorado Mammoth (4-3) waged another defensive battle tonight as the Mammoth secured a key divisional victory, 8-7.

San Jose goaltender Anthony Cosmo played a strong game in net, but was unable to stop the Mammoth, who scored three goals in the final quarter to take the game and season series from the Stealth. Cosmo recorded 40 saves in the loss and only allowed three goals in the first half.

The Mammoth opened the scoring with three goals in just over nine minutes - including two from forward Ben Prepchuk - before San Jose's Derek Malawsky put the Stealth on the board and made it a 3-1 game at 12:22 of the first quarter.

Scoring was at a premium for the remainder of the half, despite several opportunities for both teams. In fact, the two squads combined to go 0-for-10 on the power play in the first two quarters and went to their respective dressing rooms with Colorado holding just a 3-2 advantage.

Gavin Prout, Colorado's current scoring leader, opened the second half with his first goal of the game to give the Mammoth a 4-2 edge. However, the Stealth responded, scoring three of the next four goals to tie the contest at five heading into the fourth quarter.

The Mammoth managed three goals to open the fourth frame in just over two minutes, giving them an 8-5 advantage. However, the Stealth responded by notching two scores of their own, pulling to within one goal at the 6:13 mark of the quarter. That would be all the scoring for the remainder of the evening though, as the Mammoth managed to hold on to the one-goal advantage.

Stealth forward, Jeff Zywicki continued his strong rookie season as he scored two goals and added one assist. His play this season has put him in contention for a spot on the Western Division All-Star team which will be announced next week.

Kevin Fines scored his first two goals of the season for the Stealth, while Derek Malawsky, Cam Woods and Cam Sedgwick scored once each.

San Jose will continue their road trip next Saturday when they are in Rochester to take on the Knighthawks. They return home March 11 to face the expansion Edmonton Rush at 7:30 p.m.
