Four Tribe Hurlers Combine for Whitewash

INDIANAPOLIS -- Four Indians pitchers combined on a six-hit shutout as Indianapolis opened a six-game homestand with a 2-0 victory over the Columbus Clippers before a crowd of 7,482 at Victory Field.
LHP Corey Hamman (3-3) started for the Tribe, scattering five hits over seven and one-third innings before giving way to RHP Franquelis Osoria. RHP Juan Perez retired one batter in the ninth before RHP Jesse Chavez got the last two outs for his 12th save of the season.
The Clippers mounted a first-inning threat against Hamman. After LF Jorge Padilla opened the contest with a base hit to center, RF Roger Bernadina reached first with a bunt single. Hamman retired 1B Aaron Boone - who played for the Reds, Yankees, Indians and Marlins during a 10-year big league career - on a pop foul to catcher Ronny Paulino. With 3B Greg Porter batting, the Clippers tried a double steal. Paulino gunned down Padilla at third for the second out and, when Porter grounded to Jason Delaney at first, Hamman was out of the inning.
Indianapolis touched Columbus right-hander Tyler Clippard (6-10) for a run in the second. The Indians loaded the bases on walks to Paulino and Delaney, sandwiched around 3B Matt Kata's base hit. When RF Ryan Mulhern bounced into a double play, Paulino came home to make it 1-0.
Hamman got an assist from Kata's stellar glovework in the seventh. After a one-out single by C Luke Montz, SS Ed Rogers ripped a grounder down the third base line. Kata gloved the ball and, from a kneeling position, threw to second for the force. The inning ended when Hamman fanned 2B William Bergolla.
Clippard (7 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 BB, 4 SO) blanked the Indians in the seventh and made way for pinch-hitter Rey Olmedo in the eighth. After Hamman retired Olmedo on a grounder, Osoria - returned to Indianapolis earlier in the day by the Pittsburgh Pirates - came in from the bullpen. The Dominican right-hander retired Padilla for the second out and, following Bernadina's bloop single, struck out Boone to end the inning.
The Indians added a run off reliever Brian Sanches in the eighth. Delaney laced a one-out single to right and raced home when 2B Luis Cruz doubled off the wall in left.
Perez started the ninth for the Tribe and whiffed Porter for the first out. Manager Trent Jewett then summoned Chavez, who got the final two outs of the two hour, 28-minute contest.
The Indians improved to 58-67 while Columbus is now 62-61.
Delaney had a perfect night for the Tribe with a pair of walks, a double and a single in four trips to the plate. Bernadina led the Clippers with a 3-for-4 performance.
The Tribe and Columbus meet for the final time Wednesday in a Business Day Game that starts at 2:00 p.m. Probable starters are Ross Ohlendorf for Indianapolis and Marco Estrada for the Clippers.
