North Adams SteepleCats News Release

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Four members of the North Adams SteepleCats will represent the Western Division in next Sunday's 2013 New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) All-Star Game, as announced by the league Sunday.

Starting second baseman Joe Landi (URI) and catcher Kevin Martir (Maryland) will join sophomore southpaws Scott Squier (Hawaii) and Joeanthony Rivera (Barry) up at Robbie Mills Field in Laconia, N.H., next week, as the compilation of the league's top talent square off in the NECBL's version of the Midsummer Classic.

The four All-Stars are one shy of last year's five, but also making the trip will be junior Cody Doyle (Cal State LA), who will participate in the Home Run Derby. Sophomore outfielder Vinny Zarrillo (Rutgers) was also named an alternate for the outfield.

The team's leader in batting average, runs scored and total hits, Landi has been rewarded for his excellent first-half start with a starting nod at second base in the All-Star Game. The versatile Rhode Island rising senior currently leads the SteepleCats with a .315 average on 23 hits with 12 runs, and also boasts a team-high 11 stolen bases in 13 tries.

Joining Landi on the position players' side of the lineup will be Martir, a rising sophomore out of Maryland who has been excellent in a versatile role for the 'Cats this summer. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native has turned it on at the plate as of late, bringing his average up to .250 entering Sunday with three doubles and five RBI. Martir has seen time behind the plate, at designated hitter and in the outfield this summer.

The league's leader in strikeouts, Squier has been impressive on the bump this summer in a starting role for the 'Cats. The team's ace has struck out an NECBL-best 43 batters this summer while walking just 11, pitching to the tune of a 2-3 record and a 3.23 ERA over a span of 39 innings tossed.

Finally, Rivera - the SteepleCats' closer since the middle of June - has dazzled all season long. The Naples, Fla., native has yielded just one earned run over 11 2/3 frames. The Barry University rising junior owns 16 strikeouts to just two walks, posting a 2-0 record while notching three saves over that frame.

Competing in the Home Run Derby, Doyle will bring a potent bat to home run friendly Robbie Mills Field. The towering Cal State L.A. product has cranked one home run and three doubles with three RBI this summer, and is among the league leaders in on-base percentage with more walks (12) than strikeouts (11) in 21 games played.

The festivities in Laconia begin at 1:25 p.m. next Sunday (July 21), starting with the 60-yard dash before the league's best power hitters go at it in the Home Run Derby starting at 2 p.m. Following batting practice and pregame introductions and ceremonies, first pitch is slated for 5:30 p.m.
