Four-Run Seventh Inning Propels Knights to 6-4 Win Thursday

April 21, 2017 - International League (IL) - Charlotte Knights News Release

UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC-- Yoan Moncada launched a home run in the first inning that set the stage. Six innings later, Danny Hayes launched a home run that won the game.

Hayes ripped a go-ahead, game-winning three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Charlotte Knights to a 6-4 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox on Friday in the finale of their three-game series from BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte. With the win, the Knights earned a series win over the PawSox and improved their record to 6-1 at home this season.

Appearing in his 200th career American professional game, Moncada hit his fourth home run of the 2017 season in the bottom of the first inning to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Moncada, Chicago's number one overall prospect, had a stellar overall game at the plate on Thursday. The 21-year-old Cuban native went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, the home run, one walk, and two stolen bases. With the Knights down by a score of 3-2, he played a big role in the team's comeback, too.

Trailing the PawSox by a score of 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Moncada drew a one-out walk to put the tying run on base. Two batters later -- after a Moncada stolen base and a Willy Garcia strikeout -- Nicky Delmonico hit an RBI single into center field to score Moncada and tie the game at 3-3. Two batters later, Hayes did the damage.

With the game tied at 3-3, Hayes hit the first pitch he saw from Pawtucket reliever Ben Taylor for a go-ahead three-run home run. At that point, the Knights possessed a 6-3 lead over Pawtucket. Hayes finished the game 1-for-3 with the home run -- his third of the season -- and three RBIs.

RHP Tyler Danish started for the Knights and was sharp over six innings. Danish allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits over six innings but did not factor in the decision. LHP David Holmberg (2-0, 0.00) came on in relief in the seventh inning and tossed two scoreless innings to earn the win. Holmberg has not allowed a run in 9.2 innings pitched this season. RHP Chris Beck allowed a solo home run to Bryce Brentz in the top of the ninth inning, but closed the door for his first save of the season.

Pawtucket RHP Erik Cordier (0-1, 7.11) allowed two runs on one hit over two innings and was charged with the loss.

The Knights will now open a three-game series against the Rochester Red Wings (Triple-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins) on Friday and will send RHP Mike Pelfrey (1-1, 2.25) to the mound against Rochester LHP Jason Wheeler (1-1, 6.30). Pre-game radio coverage on Friday begins at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Charlotte (730 AM) and CharlotteKnights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and long-time radio broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action of Friday's 7:05 p.m. game.
