Four-Run Inning Propels Navs to Second Straight Late-Inning Victory, 4-3

Norwich, Conn.) -- Carlos Valderrama ripped a two-run double with two outs in the 8th inning to snap a one-all tie and propel the Norwich Navigators to their second straight come from behind win over the Portland Sea Dogs at Dod Stadium tonight.

Valderrama's double highlighted a four-run inning that turned a 1-0 deficit into a 4-1 lead. With one out in the 8th, Second Baseman Kenny Perez dropped a sky-high popup off the bat of Brian Buscher, allowing the Norwich DH to reach second base. After Tim Hutting was retired on a fly out to left for the second out, Dan Ortmeiere was intentionally walked bringing up Valderrama. Valderrama had a tough day up until that point wiht two strikeouts and a double play groundout but he laced a pitch from Randy Beam over the head of the leftfielder for a two-run double. Eliezer Alfonzo followed with an RBI double of his own to plate Valderrama. All four runs were unearned.

Brian Mazone started and pitched six strong innings, allowing just one earned run, but left trailing 1-0. Portland starter David Pauley shut down the Navigators on just two hits over his 6.2 innings. But for the second straight night, the Gators came back against the Portland bullpen to win their second straight exciting game. Anthony Pannone (1-2) earned hte win with two scoreless innings and Beam (0-1) took the loss. Alfredo Simon had his roughest outing in over a month, but persevered to nail down the save, his 12th on the season and 12th straight.

The Navigators will go for their first series sweep of the season when they play the Sea Dogs in the series finale tomorrow afternoon. Lefty Brian Burres (5-2) will get the ball for Norwich and he will be opposed by Portland righty Jon Papelbon (4-2). Both pitchers are in the Top-10 in the Eastern league in ERA. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05pm.
