Frederick Keys News Release

Frederick, MD - Four players from the Frederick Keys 2008 club have been selected to partake in the prestigious Arizona Fall League and Hawaiian Winter League which will begin play in the coming weeks.

C Matt Wieters and 1B Brandon Snyder will play in the prospect laden Arizona Fall League with the Suprise Rafters beginning play Tuesday, October 7th. Wieters and Snyder will join up with former Frederick Keys Nolan Reimold (2005-06) and Blake Davis (2007) on the Rafters.

RHP's Tim Bascom and Brian Parker will pitch in the Hawaiian Winter League for the West Oahu Canefires with play to get underway September 29th. Keys three-year Pitching Coach Blaine Beatty will serve that role for West Oahu through the winter season. Bascom and Parker will be joined by 2007 Frederick Key Tyler Henson and three other Orioles minor leaguers.

Wieters put together a remarkable season in Frederick and Double-A Bowie batting .355 with 27 home runs and 91 RBI's to rank highest in all three triple crown categories for all current Orioles minor leaguers. He was the first ever Orioles prospect named Minor League Player of the Year by Baseball America.

After struggling through a .229 April, Snyder got better in every month, finishing the season second in the Carolina League in batting (.315) and the Player of the Month in the league in August. Interestingly enough Snyder played with Wieters in the Hawaiian Winter League in 2007, leading the circuit with a .378 average.

Bascom was the second Orioles pick in the 2007 draft, selected in the fourth round and made his debut with the Keys late in the 2007 season. He returned to Frederick in 2008, albeit late due to an oblique strain, and finished the season strong going 3-0 with a 3.44 ERA over his last six starts.

Parker spent much of his season with Class-A Delmarva before being promoted to Frederick on August 21st. Parker made 35 appearances out of the pen with the Shorebirds going 7-5 with a 3.65 ERA. He would close the season with the Keys making four appearances for Frederick.

Beatty is finishing up his third season at the helm of the Keys pitching staff. The Orioles first round pick of the 1984 draft out of Baylor was the Carolina League Pitcher of the Year with the Hagerstown Suns in 1987. Beatty would pitch with the New York Mets (1989, 1991) before beginning his coaching career. He was formerly a pitching coach in the Carolina League with the Lynchburg Hillcats in 2001-02.
