North Adams SteepleCats News Release
The North Adams SteepleCats committed four errors, fell behind 6-0 and were unable to climb out of the hole in an 8-4 loss to the Valley Blue Sox Friday night at Joe Wolfe Field. With the loss, the SteepleCats fell to 1-1 on the season.
The game got away from the SteepleCats in the top of the second. The inning began with a leadoff walk by Hezekiah Randolph. Erik Ostberg followed with a single and then advanced to second on an error which allowed Randolph to score. With runners at the corners, one out, Cameron O'Neill was able to reach on a fielder's choice and then advanced to second on the second error of the inning, which scored Ostberg. O'Neill came around to score on a single by Brennan Washington.
"In general, there were a lot of plays out there that we could have made that fell by the wayside," said Head Coach Mike Armstrong. "If you have four or five errors in a game it is pretty tough to win no matter what kind of team you are."
The Blue Sox added another run in the third when Travis Jones led off with a double, stole third, and then scored on a sacrifice fly. They added two more runs in the fifth when Braxton Morris hit a two run double to give the blue Sox a 6-0 lead.
It was at this point where the SteepleCats were able to get themselves back in it. The 'Cats got on the board in the fifth making it 6-1. The 'Cats biggest inning was in the sixth when with two outs and nobody on, Noah Vaughan and Dustin Shirley hit back to back to singles to keep the inning alive. They then advanced to second and third on a passed ball and scored on a two run single by John Mazza to cut the lead to 6-3.
"As down as we were, we hung in there and found a way to battle," said Pitching Coach Jonah Bayliss. "We just got to find a way to clean up the errors."
The 'Cats added another run in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 6-4. After that the Blue Sox were able to stop the rally and even added a couple insurance runs in the eighth.
The SteepleCats will hit the road tomorrow looking to bounce back against the Keene Swamp Bats Saturday night at 6:30.
"It will be fun for the guys to get out of town and see a different venue," said Bayliss.
The Swamp Bats defeated the Blue Sox 5-3 in their only game of 2016 so far.
"It is a great place, they got great fans, I know it is going to be a fun atmosphere and I look forward to another game tomorrow," said Coach Armstrong.
