Schooners earn 12-11 win

NEWPORT - The Schooners came away with a 12-11 win over the Newport Gulls in a twelve-inning marathon that lasted well over four hours at Cardines field.

Mystic fell behind early once again in the first inning. The Gulls Charlie Carpenter launched a ball over the left field fence with two men on to make the score 3-0 at the end of the first inning.

The Schooners answered right back and cut the Gulls lead to just on run in the top of the second. Casey Baker popped it up to left field and the ball was dropped letting Baker take second. Aaron Hill and Ryan Ramiz would both walk to load the bases with two outs for Nick Mascelli. Mascelli lined one into left field to score both Baker and Hill to make the score 3-2 heading into the bottom of the second.

In the home half the Gulls would plate another run with a two out RBI single and bring the lead back up to two runs. In the very next inning the Gulls put runners on second and third and an RBI groundout made the score 5-2 at the end of three.

With two outs in the top of the sixth, the back half of the lineup came alive for the Schooners. They strung together four straight base hits that was capped off by Ryan Ramiz, who brought in two runs with a hard hit liner to bring the deficit to 5-4.

Again with two outs in the very next inning the Schooners were able to load the bases and an error by the Gulls shortstop cost them two runs. Aaron Hill skied a ball into shallow left-center that was dropped. Both Zach Goldstein, who was in to pinch run and Brett Bond scored to put the Schooners up 6-5.

Newport would get those two runs back in the bottom of the seventh with a couple of RBI base hits to put them back on top 7-6.

Nine batters came up in the eighth for the Schooners and they had a big four run inning to take back the lead. The first two men reached base and with runners on first and third, Taishi Terashima lined one down the line in left to bring in the first run of the inning. After two more runners reached base, Casey Baker drove in two more runs and Aaron Hill followed that up with another two RBI single to bring the Schooners lead to 10-7.

Newport would score one more time in the eighth and two more times in the bottom of the ninth to tie the ball game at ten and send it into extra innings.

In the top of the eleventh Aaron Hill led off the inning with a walk and eventually advanced to third. A couple batter later Ryan Ramiz hit a ground ball to first that was taken for the easy out and allowed Hill to score to put the Schooners up 11-10.

Newport would tie it up again in the bottom of the eleventh with an RBI base hit, but they could not close it out giving the Schooners another chance in inning number twelve.

Brett Bond hit a long fly ball out to right field that was dropped and he was able to eventually get to third base. Aaron Hill the Schooner veteran lined one up the middle to bring in Bond and give the Schooners the lead for good.

Ryan Connolly shut the door on the Gulls in the bottom of the inning securing the 12-11 win. the Schooners improved their record to 2-0 on the season.

Mystic will be back at the Shipyard Saturday to take on the Ocean State Waves. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05.
