MOLINE, IL - Chad Woollard scored what proved to be the game winning goal midway through the third period, Greg Eskedjian piled up three assists and Kristofer Westblom made 32 saves as the Fort Worth Brahmas held off a late comeback bid by the host Quad City Mallards to claim a 4-3 victory Friday night.
The Brahmas turned what had been a 2-1 lead into a seemingly comfortable 4-1 advantage by scoring twice in just under three third period minutes. Calin Wild's point-blank backhander stretched the gap to 3-1 at 6:54 of the third. At 9:54, Wollard's close range goal stretched the advantage to three goals, but the Mallards' late surge would force the Brahmas to sweat out the final moments.
The Mallards were on the power play when Matt Duffy's blast from the high slot trimmed the margin to 4-2 at 15:57 of the final frame. After pulling goaltender Neil Conway for an extra attacker, the Mallards pulled within one when Bob Preece ripped the puck past Westblom from the left wing circle with 47 seconds remaining but could not produce an equalizer before the horn.
The Mallards spent most of the night battling from behind after Tomas Klempa opened the scoring from the side of the net at 3:45 of the first period, though that Brahma lead lasted only 25 seconds before Anthony Perdicaro tied the score from the slot. The Brahmas would, however, grab the lead for good when Riley Boychuck barreled into the goalmouth to snap the puck home at 10:24 of the first.
The Mallards return to action on home ice tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. against the Denver Cutthroats. All fans attending the Mallards' match-up with the Cutthroats will receive a coupon good for one free bag of popcorn.
Tickets for tomorrow night's game- as well as seats for all remaining Mallards regular season home games- can be purchased in person at the i wireless Center ticket office, at Ticketmaster outlets, through www.ticketmaster.com or through Ticketmaster charge-by-phone toll free at 1-800-745-3000.
