Fort Wayne Komets News Release
ROCHESTER, MI--- The Fort Wayne Komets defeated the Port Huron Icehawks 3-2 in triple overtime Monday night in game seven of the 2008 Turner Cup Finals to capture the league championship. The Komets fell behind 3-1 in the series before rallying back to win the best-of-seven series 4-3 in front of a sell-out crowd of 10,462 fans.
The eventual game-winning goal was scored by amateur Justin Hodgman 23 seconds into triple overtime. Fort Wayne finished the night one for four on the power play, while Port Huron was 0 for six.
Port Huron held on, but was unable to put the puck past goaltender Nick Boucher, who made 34 saves in the final game, winning his fourth game of the series.
Hodgman was named the International Hockey League's Turner Cup Playoff Most Valuable Player. He scored five goals in the championship series, with two of the five being game-winners. He posted a total of 14 points (7g, 7a) and a plus-11 rating in the 13 playoff games played.
Tonight's victory marks the fifth time Fort Wayne has hoisted the Turner Cup as a member of the International Hockey League. Their last league championship came back in 2003 as a member of the now defunct United Hockey League.
