Published on January 4, 2012 under Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
GLENDALE, AZ (January 4, 2012) - The Fort Wayne Komets have been on quite a run lately and their strong play has earned them the #1 spot on the first CHL Coaches Poll of 2012. It marks the first time the Komets have been ranked #1 in the CHL. The CHL Coaches Poll is released on or near the beginning and middle of each month throughout regular season. Each first place vote receives 10 points, second place votes earn 9 points, etc.
The Komets (20-8-1) have won five of their last six games and find themselves tied with Wichita for the highest point total in the league. After their slow start (3-4-0 on November 11), the Komets took off going 17-4-1 since and jumping up to the top of the Turner Conference. In the recent poll, Fort Wayne earned eight of the fourteen first place votes (teams are unable to vote for themselves).
Only two other teams received first place votes and that was Wichita (20-8-1) and Allen (17-6-6). Wichita gave Fort Wayne some competition for the top spot by receiving 5 first place votes but they finished six points behind the Komets and remain #2. Allen, the #1 team on the last CHL Coaches Poll, received one first place vote and dropped to #3.
Joining the Komets as the biggest movers in the recent poll was the Rapid City Rush (16-12-1) who like Fort Wayne, moved up three spots. The Rush jumped from #8 to # 5 with the Quad City Mallards sitting as the other club in the top five (#4 with a 17-11-1 record).
Taking the largest tumble was the Evansville IceMen who are just 4-5-1 since December 10. They dropped from #3 to #6 in the poll. No team in the top 10 last time dropped out of the poll.
