
Former W-S Red Sox star, Wade Boggs, selected to MLB Hall of Fame

Winston-Salem, NC â 12-time All-Star and former Winston-Salem Red Sox third baseman, Wade Boggs, was voted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame on Tuesday. Boggs was voted in today along with former Chicago Cubs second baseman Ryan Sandberg. Boggs received 474 votes in his first year of eligibility, while Sandberg garnered 393 votes in his third try. 387 votes are needed for election. Boggs played for the Winston-Salem Red Sox in 1977. He was selected to the Carolina League All-Star team that season, after hitting .317 with two home runs and 55 RBIs. Boggs was a five-time American League batting champion and won a World Series title with the New York Yankees in 1996. Sandberg was selected as a Major League All-Star ten times from 1984-1993. Sandberg won the 1984 National League MVP, after hitting .314 with 19 home runs and driving in 84 runs.
