Florida Firecats News Release
Estero, FL- The Florida Firecats have been assigned former University of South Florida Running Back Clenton "Boobie" Crossley by the af2 league office.
Crossley finished his college career as the Bulls #2 All-Time rusher finishing his career with 1,763 yards on 366 carries and also caught 56 passes for 368 yards. He scored 17 rushing touchdowns and added 4 more on receptions, stats that become even more impressive given the fact that he had to share rushing duties with two to three other backs during his time at USF.
A shifty bruiser, the 5'10" 210lb Crossley was a three time all-state selection at South Sumter High School in Bushnell, FL. During his prep career he ran for 4,765 yards and 67 touchdowns. Equally impressive on the defensive side of the ball, which could be an asset in the Ironman style of play in the af2, he registered 388 career tackles, three interceptions, caused 16 fumbles, recovered 11 and blocked 5 kicks. He was ranked #52 in the 1999 preseason Top 100 high school players in Florida.
"We've got some big shoe to fill at the FB/LB position," said Head Coach Kevin Bouis. "The position is wide open, but Clenton is an exceptional player that we're expecting big things out of him."
Boobie was undrafted out of college but spent time with the Washington Redskins in 2005. Scouts made note of his abilities not only as a runner, but were impressed by his catching and blocking abilities.
Crossley will have an opportunity to show off his skills and his 4.66 speed next week as the Florida Firecats open their training camp Wednesday March 15th. The Firecats currently have 5 former USF Bulls coming to camp including American Conference All-af2 2nd Team selection OL/DL Greg Walls, WR/DB Bruce Gipson, WR/LB Elgin Hicks and OL/DL Cedric Battles.
The Florida Firecats open the 2006 season Saturday April 8th on the road against the defending Champion Memphis Xplorers. The Firecats will host the Xplorers Saturday April 22nd at Germain Arena for the home opener.
Single game tickets go on sale Wednesday March 15th. Call 390-CATS (2287) to reserve your seats.
