Former Sea Dog Coach Gallant Inducted into QMJHL Hall of Fame

MONTREAL, PQ - Former Saint John Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant has been inducted into the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Hall of Fame.

The Summerside, Prince Edward Island, native was recognized along with three others at a ceremony tonight in Montreal.

Gallant, 50, coached the Sea Dogs for three seasons between 2009 and 2012 and guided the team to three Jean-Rougeau Trophies as the QMJHL's regular season champions, President Cup titles in 2011 and 2012 as the playoff champions, and the 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup championship.

He posted a record of 159-33-2-7, and won the Ron-Lapointe Trophy as coach of the year for the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 seasons.

Gallant spent three seasons as a player with the Sherbrooke/St-Jean Castors and Verdun Juniors beginning in 1980, tallying 129 goals and 321 points in 188 regular season games. He won the President Cup with Sherbrooke (1982) and Verdun (1983).

He is the only person is QMJHL history to win four President Cups in a combined role as a player (2) and head coach (2).

Gallant played parts of eleven seasons in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning.

He is currently an assistant coach with the Montreal Canadiens.

Gallant is joined in the Hall of Fame Class of 2014 by Jean-Luc Phaneuf, Normand Caisse, and Patrice Brisebois.
