Former Saint Gaudreau Wins Hobey Baker Award

PHILADELPHIA, PA- After finishing one of the most prolific seasons in recent memory, Boston College junior forward Johnny Gaudreau was awarded college hockey's highest honor on Friday. The former Fighting Saint was named the winner of the prestigious Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the top player in the NCAA. Gaudreau received the honor this evening at the Loews Hotel Millennium Ballroom in Philadelphia, PA, the city where the 2014 NCAA Frozen Four is being held this weekend.

Gaudreau spent the 2010-11 season with the Fighting Saints, posting 36 goals and 36 assists for 72 points to lead the team. He tallied 11 points in 11 playoff games to help lead Dubuque to a Clark Cup Championship in the team's first season back in the USHL.

Gaudreau just completed a stellar junior season for Boston College, averaging two points per game, scoring 80 points in 40 games - the most of any Division I player in over a decade. Gaudreau was the Hockey East scoring champion was named the conference Player of the Year and First Team all-conference. Earlier this season he tied a Hockey East record, equaling former Maine and NHL star Paul Kariya with a 31 game point streak. The Calgary Flames draft pick was also awarded the Walter Brown Award as the best American born player in New England.

Gaudreau was also a finalist for Hobey Baker in 2013, finishing behind Drew LeBlanc of St. Cloud State

Gaudreau is the first former Fighting Saint to win the award. The New Jersey native was joined in Philadelphia today at the ceremony by fellow finalists Nic Dowd of St. Cloud State, and Greg Carey of St. Lawrence University. The criteria for the prestigious honor includes: displaying outstanding skills in all phases of the game, strength of character on and off the ice, sportsmanship and scholastic achievements.
