Indiana Ice News Release
Patrick Newell scored both Indiana Ice goals in their 2-0 victory over the Green Bay Gamblers but Scott Conway, Dwyer Tschantz, Alex Talcott and Tyler Pham were the chairman of the boards.
Both Indy goals came after the foursome won board battles behind the Gambler's net and set up Newell.
"On both goals I was coming to the net and received spectacular passes on my stick," commented Newell as the Ice took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five first round Clark Cup playoff series. "It is a big team win for our young team. Early in the game it was a feeling out process but as the game wore on we took better control."
Hayden Stewart got the nod in net and stopped all 22 Green Bay shots.
"The defense has been doing a great job in front of me making my job easier" Stewart stated after the shutout effort. "Most of their shots were from the outside and most of their shots were to my chest. I could swallow them up and control the rebounds."
Watching the game was Indiana University basketball coach Tom Crean. Crean gave the team a 20-minute pep-talk after the victory.
Indiana's most nervous moments came while they skated on the power play. The hosts gave up a number of short-handed chances including a breakaway to the visitor's Evan Tironese on a third period power play.
Green Bay hit the post with less than four minutes remaining in the game on a shot by Sebastian Weberg. Indiana weathered the final 90 second with the Gamblers skating with six forwards and their goaltender on the bench.
Newell scored all hosts would need at 7:24 of the second period. Conway fed Newell from below the goal line after winning a puck battle along with Tschantz.
His first goal of the game from the glove side of Jared Rutledge and he sniped his second on the stick side of the visitor netminder. Talcott duplicated the hard work behind the Gambler net at 14:05 and fed the 5'9", 150 pound forward. Pham earned a point in the scoring sequence.
The teams meet again Saturday at Pan Am Pavilion for game two of the series. The puck drops at 7:05.
