Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Just one day after Pelicans alumnus David Bote made his MLB introduction, his former Myrtle Beach teammate Gleyber Torres started in his major league debut Sunday for the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Torres is the 173rd player, including rehabbers, to have played for Myrtle Beach and also in the major leagues.

Ranked by MLB.com as the No. 5 prospect in baseball, Torres went 0-for-4 while playing second base in the Yankees' 5-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Originally signed by the Chicago Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in 2013, Torres maneuvered his way into Myrtle Beach at just 18 years old in 2015. Torres played in just seven games on the Pelicans' 2015 championship squad, spending the bulk of the season with Low-A South Bend.

The Caracas, Venezuela native began the 2016 campaign with the Birds, batting .275/.359/.433 with 23 doubles, three triples, nine home runs, 47 RBIs and 19 stolen bases in 94 games. On July 25, 2016, the Cubs packaged Torres along with his Pelican teammate Rashad Crawford, former Myrtle Beach farmhand Billy McKinney and also Adam Warren to the Yankees in exchange for left-handed pitcher Aroldis Chapman.

Torres finished the 2016 season with New York's High-A affiliate Tampa before enjoying a huge season with Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2017. Though an injury cut his 2017 campaign to just 55 games, Torres slashed .287/.383/.480 with 14 doubles, two triples, seven home runs and 34 RBIs. He had played in 14 games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2018, hitting .347/.393/.510 with three doubles, one triple, one homer and 11 RBIs before earning his promotion to the Bronx.

Like Torres and Bote, who debuted for the Cubs on Saturday, McKinney has also made his big league debut in 2018, playing for the Yankees on March 30. Former Myrtle Beach reliever Pedro Araujo began his career in The Show on March 31 for the Baltimore Orioles.

The Pelicans will give away a special Turn Two Bobblehead featuring Torres and his Myrtle Beach teammate Ian Happ to the first 1,000 fans through the gates prior to the club's 6:05 p.m. game on Saturday, August 11 against the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

The 2018 season will be the 20th season for the Pelicans franchise and fourth as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For tickets visit MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/tickets, call (843) 918-6000, or visit the Pelicans Box Office.
