Morehead City Marlins News Release
Lowell, M.A. - Former Morehead City Marlin pitcher, Joe Gunkel has made an immediate impact on the Lowell Spinners of the New York Penn League (Boston Red Sox).
The tall right-hander was drafted in the 18th round by the Boston Red Sox and has already made his way through the Gulf Coast League and to the New York Penn League. He has quickly accumulated a 2-0 record with one save through his first four appearances and has yet to allow a run in four innings on the bump for the Spinners. He has struck out five, while walking just three.
The New York Penn League is a short season league, which is just one step below High A. Gunkel made just one appearance with the Marlins, earning a loss in Wilmington against the Sharks. He had five strikeouts and failed to walk a batter in the start.
Chase McDonald has also made an impact in his first weeks as a pro ballplayer. Through just a handful of games, the former Marlin slugger already has two home runs and three RBI for the Greeneville Astros of the Appalachian League.
