High Point/Thomasville, NC -- The New York Yankees promoted former HiTom D.J. Mitchell to their American League East squad Sunday afternoon.

The right-hander from Clemson University, pitched the HiToms to the 2006 Coastal Plain League Championship tossing five innings, striking out four, allowing just two hits and one run while collecting the Petit Cup title game win. For the season, Mitchell reported a 2.25 ERA with 16 K's in 16IP and a .186 opponents batting average.

"What an exciting day for D.J., his family and the HiToms organization," HiToms President Greg Suire said. "From his first day with us, Mitchell was focused on elevating his game. Making the permanent transition form the outfield to the mound with us in 2006, it was quite evident that he had the passion, work ethic and physical tools necessary to launch a pro career."

Pitching out of the bullpen for the Yankees, Mitchell received the promotion following an impressive start this spring at AAA Scranton-Wilkes Barre. Going 2-1 with a 3.13 ERA in four starts at Triple-A, Mitchell recorded 21 K's in 23 IP and help opponents to an 0.87 WHIP.

"I knew I was pretty close," D.J. Mitchell told MLB.COM. "I still knew I needed to pitch well and prove some things at the Triple-A level. I was fortunate enough to do that pretty early. It was only four starts, but I was lucky that they did call upon me when they needed someone. I'll just take it from there."
