Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, N.C- The Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plain League announce today the addition of two more players to their 2012 roster. Outfielder Michael Camporeale (KAMPO-RELLY) and first baseman Spencer Branigan will come to Edenton this summer.
Camporeale hails from Littleton, Colo. and is a junior at the University of Washington in the NCAA Division I Pac-12 Conference. The 6-1, 200-pounder is an everyday corner outfielder and middle of the order bat for the Huskies this spring. He bats and throws from the right side and spent his 2011 summer playing for the Derby Twins in the Jayhawk League. Camporeale finished last summer batting .297. He had an on-base percentage of .383, slugged .495 and added seven doubles, two triples, and three home runs in 101 at-bats for the Derby Twins. He is a toolsy and athletic corner outfielder who is somewhat in the mold of fellow Steamer Nathan Burns because he runs and defends well and is not a one-dimensional power type hitter. He transferred to Washington from Cuesta College in central California where he was an award-winning California Community College Athletic Association player in 2011 and he looks to be another right-handed mid-order offensive producer this summer in Edenton.
Branigan is a junior first baseman from the University of Pennsylvania in the NCAA Division I Ivy League. The left-handed hitting and throwing Branigan stands at 6-5, 235-pounds, and is the starting first baseman and a middle of the order bat for the Quakers this spring. The Ross, Calif. native played for the Atwater Aviators in the Pacific West Baseball League last summer. He batted .340, finished with an on-base percentage of .434 and slugged .560, including 10 doubles, seven home runs and 40 runs driven in for the Aviators. Perfect Game CrossChecker ranked him the number 10 prospect in the PWBL after last summer. Branigan is a huge left-handed power bat from straightaway center to the right field foul pole. He is also a nice quality-sized target at first base whose experience at the position has caught up with his natural athleticism, allowing him to make great strides this spring defensively.
Camporeale has been a steady bat all spring for Washington, currently boasting a .276-.345-.457 slash line with seven doubles, four homers and 20 RBI in 105 at-bats. The home run total leads the club and he is second in RBI. UPenn's season just concluded and Branigan posted a .248 batting average, .343 on-base and stroked 11 doubles.
The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 930 alumni drafted and 48 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
