Former Hawks Petersen, Drury Seek Medal

June 3, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - A 6-1 victory for the United States on Thursday during the IIHF World Championships in Riga, Latvia, officially puts Team USA - including two former Waterloo Black Hawks - into medal contention this weekend.

Waterloo alumni Cal Petersen and Jack Drury are part of the U.S. squad which will meet the lowest remaining qualifier during the tournament semifinals on Saturday. By virtue of reaching the semifinal round, the American delegation is guaranteed to also skate in either the gold or bronze medal game on Sunday.

Petersen made 26 saves during Thursday's 6-1 win versus Slovakia. Throughout the competition, he has produced 4-1-0 record, including two shutouts. The Waterloo native has glittering statistics during the event, highlighted by a 1.01 goals-against average and a .961 save percentage.

Drury has played in all seven United States victories during the competition. He recorded a goal to help secure a 3-0 win over Kazakhstan on May 25th.

The United States was the top team during the group stage of the event, generating a 6-1 record. The squad outscored their opponents in aggregate 21-8 and was the only entry to hold their collective opponents to fewer than ten total goals.

In 2018, the U.S. won bronze during the competition, the nation's most recent medal in the event. The country's last finish as gold or silver medalists was in 1960 (gold); in that year, the Olympic Games doubled as the IIHF World Championship. The two events were later separated after the 1968 Olympics.

At least one Waterloo alumnus has now participated for the United States during 15 of the 21 IIHF Men's World Championships held since 2000. In that time, two former Hawks have helped the U.S. to bronze medals: Andy Roach in 2004 and Craig Smith in 2013.

Tournament semifinal games will be on Saturday at 6:15 and 10:15 a.m. Central Time.
