Rio Grande Valley Dorados News Release

Hidalgo, Texas --- When the Columbus Destroyers and San Jose SaberCats get ready to square off in this weekend's ArenaBowl XXI on Sunday at 4 p.m. Central (ESPN on ABC), the game will feature several former Dorados suiting up for the SaberCats.

Former Dorados head coach Kevin Guy is now in his second season as defensive coordinator for San Jose. A close friend of current Dorados head coach Marty Hammond, the two worked together during Guy's successful run with the af2 Tennessee Valley Vipers. Hammond also served as a consultant for the Dorados under Guy's leadership.

A few current Dorados played under Guy, not only with the Vipers, but also with Rio when the team went to the National Conference Final in 2005. QB Josh Kellett, WR/LB Travis McAlpine and OL/DL Curtis Jeter all played for both clubs, while Dwight Counter was with the Dorados in 2005.

Linemen Julius Gant (RGV 2005) will suit up for San Jose this Sunday, while Patrick Afif (RGV 2006) is a member of the team on injured reserve.

Hammond has a connection to San Jose WR/LB Jason Geathers, who played under Hammond at Spanish River High School in Boca Raton, Florida. "We tried to get him here, but he's played well enough to stick in Arena1," said Hammond. Geathers finished fourth on San Jose with 11 TD and 509 yards and added 24.5 tackles.

Last but not least is WR/DB Marquis Floyd, the 2005 US Army af2 IronMan of the Year. Floyd followed Guy to Rio Grande Valley after playing the 2004 season in Tennessee Valley. This season with San Jose, he finished fourth overall with 56 tackles. He was also second on the team with six interceptions, one for a TD.

The Dorados coaching staff will attend ArenaBowl XXI, departing Houston after the Dorados wrap up their regular season on the road against the Texas Copperheads on Saturday night. "It's a short trip to New Orleans," said Hammond. "And I've never been to the Bowl game. It'll be good to see Kevin and get a different perspective on the game as we prepare for our own playoff run."

The Dorados open up the ArenaCup Playoffs at home on Sunday, August 5, at 4:05 p.m. A win this Saturday assure the team home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Every Dorados game is broadcast live on Jammin' 104.9 FM (netcast on doradosfootball.com), while the Indoor War Report with Dorados Head Coach Marty Hammond airs every Friday at 5 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1240 AM.
