Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

San Angelo - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (5-5) managed three hits while striking out nine times in five innings against San Angelo Colts (6-4) starter and former Houston Astros pitcher Ezequiel Astacio in a 5-1 loss in the regularly scheduled game tonight at Foster Field which lasted seven innings because of the need to complete last night's game first.

The Colts got on the board in the bottom of the first against Cesar Pena (0-2) with two outs as Ronnie Gaines doubled and Bryan Frichter hit an RBI-single to make it 1-0.

Jason Landreth led off the second with a single and Nick Mahin reached on a fielder's choice. He moved to second on a wild pitch. Mahin stole third and the throw went into leftfield, allowing him to score to make it 2-0.

The Harlingen High School South alumnus went two and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits. He struck out two and did not issue a walk.

Ezequiel Astacio (1-0) struck out five of the first seven hitters he faced. In the top of the third, though, Felix Cerda led off with a double. With one out, Joaquin Rodriguez laid down a sacrifice bunt, but the throw from Astacio went into right field, allowing Cerda to score to make it 2-1.

Ryan Dixon was cruising along in relief of Pena. With two outs in the fifth, however, Bradley Goldsmith hit a grounder to third. Jonathan Poterson's throw bounced over Alberto Cruz and into right field for a two-base error. The return throw to the infield got away, allowing Goldsmith to move to third. Hunter Jobes followed with a walk and Gaines hit a two-run triple to make it 4-1.

The Colts added an insurance run with two outs in the sixth. Shan Sullivan was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Matt Acevedo to make it 5-1.

Jameson Maj pitched two perfect innings, striking out three, to pick up his first save. The WhiteWings and Colts play game three of this four-game series tomorrow at 5:05 p.m. Right-hander Reymond Cruz (2-0) will face right- hander Brian Henschel (2-0).
