Force Top Buccaneers in OT
January 24, 2021 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Fargo Force News Release
The Force came out on top in tonight's battle against the Buccaneers, earning a 3-2 overtime win and splitting the weekend. Force newcomer Cody Monds scored Fargo's first and last goals of the night playing an instrumental role in the Force win. Brennan Boynton played a big part as well making some unbelievable saves throughout the game.
Period one saw lots of penalties on both sides of the ice, Fargo with four and Des Moines with three. A little over eight minutes into the period the Force found themselves with three guys in the box putting them at a 3 on 5 disadvantage. Des Moines capitalized on the opportunity and scored the only goal of the first period, giving themselves a 1-0 lead.
The penalty minutes in period two were way down with only one power play opportunity for Des Moines at 11:38, that was killed off easily by the Force. Fargo had some big scoring opportunities but the netminder for the Buccaneers, Remington Keopple put up a wall. With nine seconds remaining in the period Cody Monds fired one in a rebound, off a shot from Tristan Broz. The teams ended the period in a 1-1 tie, with Fargo leading in shots-on-goal 24-19.
A little over five minutes into period three it looked like the Force had finally taken the lead. However, the goal was waved off by the officials, a call that was received with a chorus of boos. With 11:01 left to play the Force sent one to the penalty box, giving Des Moines another power play opportunity. Again they took advantage, scoring their second power play goal of the night and taking a 2-1 lead. With only 1:38 remaining, Captain Nick Strom fired one through Keopple's legs. Bear Hughes set a nice screen in front, sending the teams into overtime.
Halfway through the OT, Austin Wong won a neutral zone face off and took the puck down the ice, splitting his defenders and passing it on to Monds who lit the lamp giving Fargo a 3-2 win. The Force improve to 15-7-2-0 and remain on top of the Western Conference. Next weekend the Force hit the road for 3 games in 3 days, opening at Sioux Cit on Friday, before heading to Lincoln for games Saturday and Sunday.
