Bakersfield Blitz News Release

Bakersfield, Calif. - The Bakersfield Blitz (10-5) will host the Hawaiian Islanders (8-7) on Saturday night in an af2 showdown at Centennial Garden in the final regular season game of the year. Kick off is at 7:00 p.m. while the doors open at 6:00 p.m.

All season long fans have come to Blitz games and fought for the balls thrown into the seats as souvenirs. Well, now the fighting is over. The first 2,000 fans through the gates on Saturday will get a free regulation-size Blitz Football, courtesy of KGET-TV 17 and Stinson's. Six lucky fans will randomly receive a giveaway football that features an autograph of local NFL stars David Carr or Joey Porter.

Saturday is also Pigskin Pride Night. Any fan that wears a football jersey to this weekend's game for any team (NFL, NCAA, af2, etc.) can purchase two-for-one tickets. This game also celebrates the "Wild About Reading" program that has taken place this summer. Students in the program who read a minimum of 10 books earned a vouche good for two complimentary terrace tickets to this game. On top of all this, it's Season Ticket Referral Night as well, in which season ticket holders received a limited number of tickets to use to recruit additional season ticket holders.

There will be a special tribute this Saturday for former Bakersfield Blitz FB/LB Julian Yearwood, who passed away last season during a game while playing for Bakersfield against Wichita on July 17th. A special banner will be raised in his honor in the Garden rafters.

The Blitz is faced with an opportunity to lock up the No. 2 seed in the National Conference with a victory over Hawaii. The top two seeds in each conference receive a first round bye in the playoffs, which are set to open next weekend. If they lose, they need a victory by Quad City (over Louisville) to hold on to the second seed. Win or lose, the Blitz can finish no lower than the third seed.

Playoff Tickets

Regardless of this week's outcome, the Blitz are guaranteed to host a playoff game, the only question marks are when and who. If the Blitz finishes as the #2 seed, their first round bye will lead to a home playoff game on Saturday, August 14th. Tickets would go on sale for that game on Monday, August 9th. Should they finish as the #3 seed, they will host a first round playoff game on Saturday, August 7th and tickets will go on sale on Monday, August 2nd.

All Blitz games, home and away, can be heard on KGEO AM 1230 with the "Voice of the Blitz" Kevin Bartl. This weekend's game can also be seen live on Bright House Networks Ch. 21. A replay of the match will be shown on Sunday afternoon on Bright House Networks at 1:00pm on the same station.

Group outings for the Blitz are on sale now by contacting the Blitz office at 716-BLITZ (2548) or by stopping by the Bakersfield Sports Entertainment office located at Centennial Garden. The Garden box office is open Monday through Friday 10:00am – 5:00pm and opens at noon this Saturday. For up-to-date information on the Blitz, log on to www.bakersfieldblitz.com.
