Milwaukee Wave News Release

MILWAUKEE, WI (March 11, 2007) - Seven days ago, Marcelo Fontana was distraught. He took the Milwaukee Wave's 13-8 home defeat to Detroit personally, knowing that he'd missed three can't-miss chances in front of the Ignition goal. Sunday, the 33-year-old Argentine midfielder responded in true veteran fashion. His two goals and assist sparked the Wave to a 9-0 lead in the first half against Philadelphia, and the Wave held on for an 11-7 victory over the first-place KiXX at U.S. Cellular Arena. With the win, Milwaukee (12-13) snapped a five-game losing streak in front of 5,426 fans and briefly moved ahead of Chicago again for the fourth and final playoff spot. The Storm (10-12) played Sunday evening against Detroit. "Celo" had plenty of support. Anthony Maher recorded a goal and assist, Goran Vasic scored his first four points in six games with the Wave and the entire team defended with grit, breaking up passes and blocking shots from beginning to end. Most indicative of the Wave's determination was a monumental individual effort by Fontana late in the first half. With a little more than a minute remaining, Philadelphia attempted to work the ball out of their back end on a restart. Fontana pressured and dug the ball right from the feet of Ptah Myers. A couple dribbles, a deke of keeper Peter Pappas and it was 9-0. That play grew in significance when Genoni Martinez rifled in a restart goal with 19 seconds left in the half for Philadelphia's first points. The KiXX (15-10) brought Pat Morris on as a sixth attacker with almost 5 minutes left. Don D'Ambra made it 11-7 with 3:39 left on a 3-pointer, but Nick Vorberg made a pair of superb saves in the final 2:30 help lock the game up. Milwaukee authored another one of its patented fast starts. Vasic's 3-pointer deflected in off a KiXX defender to open the scoring. It reached 5-0 at the 10:09 mark with a gorgeous combination play. Troy Dusosky fired a ball of the near-side boards; it bounced into the penalty area where Fontana touched it to a charging Maher, who one-timed it into the roof. Maher returned the favor 22 seconds into the second quarter, getting free on the boards with a nice spin move, drawing Pappas out and then feeding Fontana for a sliding score.
