California Cougars News Release

(STOCKTON, CALIF., MARCH 11, 2007) - California may be out of the playoff hunt but they still get to try and play spoiler. Pride and the chance to keep the Blast out of the top spot in the league standings are motivation enough as Baltimore returns to Stockton for the final time this season.

The first quarter played like a classic outdoor match, a defensive zero-zero tie.

The second quarter looked to be a repeat of the first until Cougars midfielder Brian Farber deflected a Ryan Hall shot past Blast goalkeeper Brian Rowland 5:30 into the quarter for the first points of the night.

Co-captain Aaron Susi extended the Cougars lead on a Semir Mesanovic assist with 3:24 left in the first half.

Baltimore got into the scoring column 14 seconds later on an unassisted goal from defender Billy Nelson to make it a 4-2 contest.

Coming out of the locker room after the half and still on a man advantage from the third quarter, Baltimore evened up the score 4-4 on a goal by defender P.J. Wakefield on an assist from Robbie Aristodemo 27 seconds into the quarter.

Baltimore took the lead with 9:30 remaining in the quarter on an unassisted goal from Blast forward Denison Cabral to make it a 6-4 contest. The Blast extended the lead 8-4 on a Nelson goal at the 6:31 mark in the quarter.

The fourth quarter became a defensive battle as both team were not willing to give up a goal. With 1:39 to go in the game, the Cougars pulled starting 'keeper Bayard Elfvin in favor of defender Nelson Santana as the Sixth Attacker, a move that would pay off. With 16 seconds left in the game, defender Antonio Sutton closed the gap to 8-6 to end the game.

California hits the road for an extended road trip. The Cougars will face the Chicago Storm on March 18 and will stay in the area to take on the Detroit Ignition on March 23.
