St. Lucie Mets News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (May 27, 2015) - The Lakeland Flying Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first and went on to beat the St. Lucie Mets 4-1 on Wednesday at Tradition Field.
The first five batters for Lakeland hit singles off of Mets starter Logan Taylor. Ben Verlander's liner up the middle brought in two runs to make it 3-0. A double play off the bat of Bobby Borchering with the bases loaded plated the final run of the night for Lakeland.
The Mets scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the first. Jeff McNeil led off with a single and stole second. A ground out to second by the rehabbing Travis D'Arnaud moved McNeil to third. Michael Conforto's RBI ground out brought McNeil home.
D'Arnaud, working his way back from a broken right pinkie suffered on April 19, went 0 for 3 with three ground outs to second base. He caught seven innings.
The final eight innings breezed by with the Mets only getting four more hits and the Flying Tigers only notching two more hits.
After giving up his fifth straight hit to start the game, Taylor didn't allow another hit the rest of his outing. At one point he retired 11 in a row and 13 out of 14. He made it through six innings on 93 pitches. Taylor was charged with four runs on five hits and he fell to 0-3.
Matt Crouse was making his first start of the season for Lakeland after appearing out of the bullpen seven times. He needed only 58 pitches to get through five innings. He allowed one run on four hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out one.
Julio Felix tossed three perfect innings with one strikeout for the Flying Tigers. Paul Voelker earned his third save by getting Matt Oberste to ground into a game-ending double play.
A night after walking 10 Mets, the Flying Tigers pitching staff did not issue a free pass.
Dominic Smith was the lone bright spot for the Mets offense. He went 2 for 3 with his eighth double in the last 11 games. He extended his hitting streak to nine games.
Kyle Regnault tossed two scoreless innings of relief. Robby Coles struck out three batters in the ninth.
The Mets' four-game winning streak came to an end. They were aiming to get back to .500 for the first time since May 5 when they were 13-13.
The Mets (22-24) and Flying Tigers (22-23) play game 3 of their series on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Gate at Tradition Field open at 5:30 p.m. for Dollar Night, which features $2 beer, $1 hot dogs, $1 soda and $1 popcorn.
