
Flying Chanclas End Losing Streak with Walk-Off Hit by Pitch

SAN ANTONIO - With a terrific performance from Reggie Lawson, the Flying Chanclas had a chance to end their losing streak on Thursday night. After taking an early 1-0 lead, the Frisco RoughRiders tied the game in the fourth game. From there, it was a back-and-forth battle that came to an end in the bottom of the ninth inning. After loading the bases, Connor Hollis was hit by a pitch to score the game-winning run. San Antonio wins with a final score of 2-1.
Owen White was the starting pitcher for the Frisco RoughRiders. He had to pitch out of a jam in the bottom of the first inning. Connor Hollis started off the inning with an infield single and Thomas Milone drew a walk. With two on and no outs, Domingo Leyba struck out looking and Yorman Rodriguez grounded into a double play to end the inning.
San Antonio capitalized on a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the second inning. Webster Rivas started the inning with a base hit into center field. Rivas was transferred from Triple-A El Paso prior to tonight's game. Tirso Ornelas hit a line drive that hit off of White and bounced into right field. On the play, Rivas was able to advance to third base. Rivas scored as Jorge Ona grounded into a double play. The Flying Chanclas took a 1-0 lead.
Reggie Lawson was the starting pitcher for the Flying Chanclas. After dominating in the month of June (4-0, 1.37 ERA in five starts), he continued his hot streak on Thursday night. Through the first three innings of play, Lawson allowed one base hit while striking out two batters.
The Chanclas had a chance to improve their lead in the bottom of the third inning. With one out in the inning, Hollis and Milone hit back-to-back singles. Leyba hit a high pop up that fell into center field. Instead of a single, Hollis was thrown out at third base after waiting to see if the ball would hit the ground. With two runners on and two outs, Rodriguez struck out swinging to end the inning.
The RoughRiders plated their first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Dustin Harris began the inning with a double down the right field line. Justin Foscue grounded out and advanced Harris to third base. With the infield playing in, Blaine Crim hit a grounder to Ripken Reyes at second base. Instead of going home, he made the play at first base and Harris came around to score. The game was tied at 1-1.
Lawson pitched out of a jam to keep the score tied in the top of the sixth inning. After retiring the first batters of the inning, Harris legged out a triple into the right field corner on a ball that got past Ona. With the go-ahead run on third base and Justin Foscue at the plate, Lawson was able to get the Rangers prospect to fly out and end the inning.
The 16th ranked Padres prospect finished the night after pitching seven innings. He allowed just one run on three hits while striking out four batters. He also failed to allow a base on balls. For Lawson, this was his sixth consecutive start allowing one run or fewer dating back to June 7th.
Owen White was equally impressive Thursday night. The right-hander lasted six innings while allowing one run on five hits with six strikeouts. He was replaced by Tyler Thomas in the bottom of the seventh inning.
After a scoreless seventh inning from Thomas, Joe Corbett came in to pitch the eighth inning and had an adventure against the Flying Chanclas. He allowed a lead-off single to Reyes before he was thrown out trying to steal second base. After striking out Hollis, Milone hit a single to extend the inning. Leyba reached base on a fielding error from Jax Biggers. Rodriguez drew a walk to load the bases. With the bases loaded and two outs, Rivas grounded into a force out to end the inning.
Carlos Belen came on to pitch for Lawson in the top of the eighth inning. After a scoreless eighth inning, the right-hander pitched out of a jam in the top of the ninth inning. With one out in the inning, Crim hit a single to right field. After striking out the next batter, he allowed a walk to Kellen Strahm. With two runners on and two outs, Sandro Fabian hit a fly ball deep to left field that was caught by Tirso Ornelas and preserved the tie game.
Triston Polley was the new pitcher for Frisco in the bottom of the ninth inning. Ornelas began the inning with a single to left field. Ona drew a walk to advance Ornelas into scoring position.
