Central Illinois Flying Aces News Release

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Flying Aces defeated the U.S. National Under-17 Team, 7 to 3 in the first game of the weekend series.

The Aces outshot Team USA, 42 to 21, and eleven different Aces players recorded points in the win. Lynden Breen (Grand Bay-Westfield, NB) and Trevor Janicke (Maple Grove, Minn.) led the way with three-point nights.

At 2:39 in the first, Stephen Halliday (Toronto, Ont.) corralled a pass from Breen with one hand on his stick and broke into the zone and scored five-hole.

Philip Elgestål (Gotenburg, Swe.) drove wide and entered the zone with possession and passed to Max Ellis (Canton, Mich.) who scored on the backhand at 5:14 in the first.

Breen caught Halliday with a slick pass to lead him on a breakaway. Halliday spun around to pass to Sebastian Dirven (Cornwall, Ont.) who had joined the rush and scored top-shelf over the blocker at 15:04 to give the Aces a three-goal lead.

Team USA got on the board at 8:10 in the second. A USA power play expired right as a shot bounced off the top of the cross bar, Brett Berard came around the back of the net and buried the rebound.

At 10:58 in the second, Trevor Janicke (Maple Grove, Minn.) made the outlet pass to Tate Singleton (West Lebanon, NH) who found Colby Enns (Minot, ND) all alone driving down the slot. Enns snapped the puck past the goaltender's glove to make it 4-1.

Late in the second period, Singleton stole the puck and passed to Janicke who got the puck to Payton Matsui (Lakeville, Minn.). Matsui popped the water bottle and gave the Aces a four goal lead with the score 5-1.

Breen drove past the Team USA player defending him and roofed it at 1:31 in the third to make it 6-1. Jeremy Davidson (Schoolcraft, Mich.) also assisted on the goal.

At 6:01 in the third while on the power play, Chase Foley (Mendota Heights, Minn.) passed the puck down low to Janicke who threaded the puck through three USA defenders to Dirven who scored his second of the night to make it 7-1.

Ty Smilanic scored for Team USA on the power play at 6:29 in the third to reduce the Aces lead to five.

Team USA scored shortly after a face-off when Tanner Latsch pushed a rebound past the goaltender.

The Aces capitalized on the turnovers they caused, and the defense frequently joined the rush as the Aces flew to the dominant win.

Ryan Snowden (Kennett Square, Penn.) stopped fourteen of seventeen shots to backstop the Flying Aces to the victory.

The Flying Aces play at home tomorrow, Saturday, October 20 against Team USA in the weekend series. Next weekend, the Aces travel to Madison to take on the Capitols on Friday, October 26. The following night (Sat., Oct. 27), they host the Green Bay Gamblers at Grossinger Motors Arena at 7:07 p.m.
