Flyers Roll Over Division Rival

St. George RoadRunners News Release


FULLERTON, CALIFORNIA -The St. George RoadRunners have had no problems as of late putting up a multi-run inning. To their detriment, they club has not been able to keep their opponents from doing the same. Friday night at Goodwin Field, the OC Flyers scored 11 unanswered runs at one point to handily win the series opener 13-4.

St. George dropped its third in a row on their current road trip and fall to 8-7 in the second half. The Flyers kept pace toward the top of the second half race improving to 8-4.

Jesse Smith benefitted from the late Flyer offense to pick up his seventh win. The righty tossed six innings of five-hit ball allowing one earned run.

Justin Abbott (0-3) received the loss in his first 2009 start after scattering five runs on nine hits in his five innings.

The Flyers struck in the2nd inning when Jimmy Rohan scored from third on a wild pitch after leading off with a double down the right field line.

St. George took advantage of three hits and two Flyer errors in the 5th. Yosvany Almario tied the game with an RBI sacrifice fly to left plating Henry Calderon. Eric Pringle crossed home on a base hit from Ryan Stevenson. The Samurai scored on an error in right field after a Chase Leavitt's single.

OC immediately responded in the bottom of the fifth and piled on plenty of insurance in the following frames. Nick Guerra doubled off the glove of Angel Sanchez at third to knock in Steve Boggs. The Flyers left the potential tying run at third after Julian Benavidez grounded out to second with the bases loaded.

OC took control of the game in the sixth on RBI doubles by Juan Senreiso and Derrek Perren. Damian Jackson highlighted the biggest inning of the game - OC's six-run seventh - with a towering three-run homer.

Steve Boggs would add insurance in the eighth with a single plating a pair in the eighth.

STG would get a run in the ninth when Pringle touched home on an Almario ground out.

The series concludes on Saturday with a double header beginning at 6:05pm Mountain.
